The hotel accepted my credit card and reservation in advance, but less than 24 hours before I was due to arrive, they informed me that they could not process the payment. I contacted my bank and they confirmed that the card was fine and that the hotel had not attempted payment. The response of the hotel was that they could not process the payment and that as the reception was only open for a few hours each day and would not be available on my arrival, I would need to cancel the reservation. It is now low season in Burgos, so I was able to get another hotel with no payment issues - this will not be the situation in a few weeks when high season starts. I accept that hotels need payment in advance, but they need to ensure they have adequate systems to accept payment and not expect the customer to find the solution for a problem that belongs to the hotel. I can only assume that they were overbooked and it was easy cancel a solo traveler. As a pilgrim, I would not recommend this hotel to anybody doing the Camino and certainly not to solo female travelers - we all need a hotel that is reliable and there are good alternative options in Burgos.
