Unfortunately, this was the worst stay of our UK trip.
The owner was extremely unwelcoming, as he threatened not to allow us to check in late. After a long day of traveling, we called around 8:30 pm to inform them we were still far away and would arrive around 11–11:30 pm. The listing clearly states that late check-in after 10 pm is possible with a £20 fee.
Instead of accommodating this, the owner became angry on the phone, repeatedly saying that check-in was at their “discretion” and that they would not be “held at ransom” (their exact words). They insisted they would not wait past 10:30 pm because they wanted to go to sleep, even if that meant leaving our group of five without accommodation for the night.
We drove as fast as we safely could and kept them updated. The owner reluctantly extended the latest possible check-in to 11 pm but firmly stated that after that, no one would answer the phone or open the door. For travelers in a foreign country, this rigid and hostile approach was the opposite of hospitality. I strongly recommend avoiding this place at all costs.
For practical details: ceilings in some rooms are very low (easy to hit your head when getting up from bed), and in certain rooms the bathroom is not en-suite—it is located outside and only accessible via stairs. This setup was uncomfortable and inconvenient, especially at night or for older guests.
