This hotel is terrible. It shouldn't be able to open based of the state of the grounds and the lack of amenities. When we booked it there was no mention of any of the this. When we arrived we were shocked to find the grounds were like a dumping ground. Old suitcases, beer bottles, general rubbish scattered around the parking area. 3 spaces were full of skips, leaving very little parking for customers, as the car park has about 10 spaces. So first impressions were worrying. At check in I asked about the restaurant and bar, to be told they were shut. great. They still had breakfast but after the state of the place we declined. The receptionist told us half the hotel was shut as undergoing refurb, but we were getting a newly renovated room. Walking down the dark hallways to the room we were faced with dark and dingy scruffy old doors, dark paint and many pictures of Muhammad Ali pop art. Strange. Then we get into the room, yes new carpet and paint, with old and cruddy furniture. No air con, there was a fan in the wardrobe. Then opening the curtains we had a room with a view, a view of a building site, loads of rubbish and the car park. I stay in hotels regularly and have been in some not so desirable ones but this was the pits. This is Best Western not some scruffy motel. The shower tray was flimsy and felt like it hadn't been levelled up properly. It moved underneath. Only good thing about it was the complimentary water, and a couple of biscuits in the room. £150

Hotel undergoing renovations after being a former asylum hotel. This was not clear at the time of booking. Outside the hotel is like a building site. Grounds not maintained. No restaurant or bar open even though stated available so relied on the local Coop for food and beverage. No lift so had to carry my case to the third floor. Stairs had bits of chip board on them hence no cleaning for 3 days. Faint smell of smoke throughout. Marked hand towel... query dirty. No AC so had to rely on portable fan in the heat wave. Floor by the bottom of the bed edge not vacuumed well with dried grass present. Only one positive... lady on reception Toni was lovely... very helpful and friendly and did her best to defend the hotel's short comings. Overall an awful stay. Best Western as a global brand should be ashamed! Clearly greed when they should had waited and done the refurb completely before reopening.

Nicely renovated room I stayed in, however still work in progress in and around the hotel. No bar or resturant available in the evening which wasn't mentioned when booking which was disappointing after a very long drive. Staff were brilliant though. I'm sure once finished with things mentioned available it will be a nice hotel to stay in.

I have stayed in a lot of different hotels in the last month, and if this is a 4 star hotel then the others were 7 or 8 star. The first room we were given hadn’t been cleaned properly with crisps on the chair. The bed sheets were torn and the mattress had dirt on it. We were moved to another room wish was slightly better so we stayed although my wife wanted to check out immediately. The bathroom in the second room looked good but the toilet didn’t flush well and the shower was very slippery. The following morning I was woken at 08.30 am and told I would have to use my car as they were going to put up scaffolding. I wasn’t impressed when I asked could it wait 30 minutes and was told no. I did park my car close to the hotel as children were playing football in the centre of the car park and didn’t want my car damaged. Not impressed I would not choose to return.

Easy to find and pleasant enough, room was well appointed but the TV didn't have sound, we don't really use it so no bother. Bed was pretty big so very comfy and the bathroom was very nice. We paid for breakfast at nearly £18 for two i was expecting a decent choice. What we got was not very good at all, stone cold bacon, stone cold eggs and one stone cold hash brown. The beans were the only hot thing with the toast you cook yourself.

Staff were lovely and the check in and out were quick and efficient. Several things in the room did not work but comfortable bed. The breakfast wasn’t great. The staff, though were all extremely helpful and cheerful.

Excellent location, short walk from station. Spacious room, very comfortable bed. Disappointed to find no fridge in the room & no glasses to drink from. The hot beverage selection was great but the bottles of water were very small.

Friendly, helpful staff who helped us to find a quiet room. Good location - only 5 mins walk into town and a local Co-op opposite. The bed was comfortable. The only downside was the lack of air-conditioning and windows that would not open fully. Although a fan was provided, the room was still quite hot. A refrigerator in the room would also have been nice.

Located close to the station and to the main High Street within about 5/10 min walk easy to access local amenities. Room was adequate all be it very stuff/close at night. Breakfast was poor, food was luke warm at best. The staff however on the whole helpful and polite. Location was good, although the hotel itself is over priced for what it is, it is in a good location and the executive rooms are adequate the standard rooms are just about passable old and tired and in desperate need to updating!!

We stayed for two nights to allow us to explore Chelmsford and the surrounding area (RHS Hyde Hall & Essex Regimental Museum etc). The reception staff were very polite and helpful, but owing to the recent Covid restrictions the room did not get cleaned during our stay but I was able to obtain additional coffee, milk etc from reception. The room was spacious and comfortable and there were many spare spaces in the car park (which is always important to us). It is walking distance from the railway station and city centre. However, there is an extremely bad pot-hole located in the approach road to the car park (when exiting back on to New Road) and this in my opinion should be drawn to guests attention when leaving the hotel for the first time. Overall would certainly recommend it

The bed was very large and comfortable and a well appointed room, the breakfast was plentiful but I was surprised how many items were 'shared surfaces' such as large jugs of juice with fiddly lids touched by all guests and even though signs to wear masks in the breakfast dining room several guests didn't and it was not enforced which seemed odd whilst having a self serve buffet style arrangement. I would also like to have seen hand sanitizer provided on the tables
