I stayed there twice within a week, staying in three different rooms. The best thing about the hotel is the rooms: they are clean, relatively modern and a fair size. The rooms facing the pool are quiet. The shuttle to and from the airport is free. The were several things that weren’t so good: On my second stay I arrived at 7.30pm to be told that the hotel is full. It eventually transpired that they were still cleaning some rooms, presumably due to some customers being allowed extremely late checkouts despite those rooms being sold for the following night. I eventually got a room after standing at reception for 1 hour and 20 minutes. I suggested that some compensation might be in order but they only offered a free drink ($3!). It was later increased when I complained to the manager. The aircon in one room didn’t work well. On the first stay , the airport pick up didn’t show up despite reconfirming it the day before, so I had to take a local taxi to the hotel at night time. There’s quite a lot of traffic noise from the street side of the hotel. One morning there was only a trickle of running water for several hours, but that might not be the hotel’s fault. Some rooms safely deposit boxes are key operated. They only provide the key if you sign that you will re-imburse them US$750 if you lose the key which is outrageous and more than my valuables are worth!

I stayed at Akwa Palace for 7 nights. Beautiful hotel, for me the best in Douala right now. Friendly and very helpful staff. Good service and the room was clean with a lot of amenities. I will definitely come back. Shout out to Donald from the cleaning service.

In my earlier I review I meant to add; the Hotel didn't have a record of my Expedia booking. They sorted it out, but it could have been tricky. I had printed out the receipt of my Expedia payment, and it was lucky I'd done so. Really helped unravel the problem.

The word that sums up the Akwa Palace is "tired". The staff are super friendly and couldn't be more helpful, but of you're looking for a luxury experience this isn't it. Having said that, I haven't tried the other 4 star hotels in Douala. And Douala itself could hardly be described as a 4 star experience. I've traveled widely in sub-Sharan Africa and I can tell you that if you're expecting the same sort of experience as say, the Serena in Dar es Salaam, or the Norfolk in Nairobi, you won't find it here. And don't allocate too much time in looking around Doula, there really isn't a great deal to see.

Extremely friendly staff but especially the old building needs renovation. Inside the rooms it is maintained ok but you can feel the humidity everywhere as soon as you leave it.

The hotel is dated in parts, but is kept clean and the hotel service has been good overall. Security and covid measures are excellent in every way. The air conditioner failed in my room early in my 4 week stay, the technician, (Messi), was outstanding and when it could not be repaired he arranged for a room swap which took only 10 minutes or so. The pool area is nice and the bar service is good, again the staff are super. The reception, catering and housekeeping staff have been faultless and all are bi lingual. Breakfast is pretty good overall but expensive, as are meals and drinks in the restaurants and bars. The only downsides I have encountered are:- 1. The internet connection which is very poor at weekends and poor during the week. 2. The restaurant menu is very limited, especialy for a long stay. 3. The food quality varies very much, what was great a few days earlier was cold and less tasty the next time. I would stay here again but would arrange my own internet connection with a mifi device.

Akwa Palace, you’ve said Palace... definitively not. It’s just a very uncomfortable, noisy, smelly, expensive hotel. I got a room in the historical old Akwa Palace with view on the street. The room and furniture are surely 50 years old, the window is not fully closing (imagine at night, trucks and taxis honking all the time), dirty curtains and noisy but working A/C. Refurbishment are ongoing at some floors, which brings additional noises. Smelly carpet in the corridors, noisy (uneducated guests) in the corridor at night. Breakfast is ok, clearly the staff do its best. 2/4 only elevators are working and to be used by staff and guests, leads to long waiting time. The WiFi is working well and the pool seems nice. Conclusion: avoid this place, there’s much better for less money in Douala.
