A vibrant, local pub well supported by the community. I stayed for 2 nights over a weekend. I did not have the breakfast, but did have 2 evening meals. They don't mention the size of either of the steaks on offer on their menu. I had the beef which was OK. They did however give me a ploughman's listed on their lunch menu for my dinner. 3 reasonable sized pieces of cheese which were nice, but one slice of ham and toasted bread, 4 cherry tomatoes and some baby pickles with dips. I was hoping for more. The bar staff (Hannah and Mel) were great and friendly which probably gives the place an additional point. Bedroom was located in the roof, so if you are not fit or wobbly on your feet or suffer with vertigo, book the lower rooms. The room was huge, very clean and looked to have been recently refurbished. It was hot but the addition of a portable fan was most welcome. The shower was excellent. A small fridge in the room was great for chilling bottles of water for the next day. The bed was big with a very firm mattress which I don't mind, but the chairs in the room look great but can't be used for sitting on for any length of time, which was useful as on night one the pub router went down at 8:45 p.m. meaning no TV. There was no TV available on the 2nd evening either. I was attending the living history event down the road, but didn't know that the internet would also be from the stone ages which I think is a local issue and not the pub specifically. So food, average; bar atmosphere very good; bar staff excellent; bedroom pretty good.
