Loved this place, it was beautiful. Rooms very clean, staff awesome, pools were clean and loungers available. My only complaint was the seaweed at the beach. I understand its a huge problem but there was not attempt to clean it all in front of their property. It smelled really bad. Other places close by made attempts to clean it front of their beach. But I would return here, just at a different time of year.

Please beware of the "Resort Fees" I had to pay an additional amount and according to them it was resort fees, environmental fees, and service fee. At first I thought it was okay but then I remembered that is not what was on my Expedia paper and when I asked for more explanation they said I didn't pay it. Upon check out I noticed all those fees were already detailed in what I had paid through Expedia. The hotel was also a bit dirty. Chairs in one of the lounges were dirty. Cocina restaurant was closed and we were not aware until after we checked in. Should be told when booking. One pool was also closed for a private event for one of the days. I think this information should be communicated when booked. The resort should reach out to the guest who book. Pools were not cleaned daily and there was bugs and leaves on the pool. Pool chairs had dirty pillows. Jacuzzi does not work. Jets worked but water was not warm at all. LOTS of mosquitos not the resorts fault but beware. Some staff were friendly but the manager who I spoke to about the fees was a little heated.

Great, helpful, and friendly staff that make an effort to recognize guests despite the short time allowed. The breakfast buffet was filled with alternatives that should suit every visitor - from greens to eggs and sides to pancakes and sweets. However there were invariably lines for omelets every day. While I don't mind waiting for my breakfast to be prepared, I do expect to be able to wait at my table while consuming another item that I will enjoy.

Nothing special about this resort definitely not worth your time or money. Upon arrival you’re hit with astronomical “resort fees” expect to pay an insane amount of money when you get there. Nobody can tell you what these hidden fees are STAY FAR AWAY FROM HERE. One place to eat with reservation only. No night entertainment, beach is disgusting, they “clean” it but not really. Ran out of water so it smelled horrible.

The hotel is old and shows it. Wind comes in all around the doors, there are holes in the roof. We walked into a worker changing out the shower head and he was supposed to bring a big one back - not! We called the first day to have our soap dispenser changed out because the pump didnt work, they never did. The air conditioner didnt get cold. Check in time was 3pm. They had 2 workers checking people in with 5 people in line. There were people walking behind the counter, not helping. They should have as many people as possible at check in time to help. The food was marginal - most no taste at the buffet. Because of the sargassum, you cant go into the ocean. They didnt have enough chairs at the pools and the hotel was only 1/2 full. They wouldn't let people put tables together so they could sit with each other. The outdoor seating was minimal and again couldnt put tables together. The bell boys were very helpful and nice. Kimberly, at the buffet was super nice and helpful. They can make some changes to make it better - more chairs, more helpful staff and maintenance would help.

DO NOT BOOK HERE!! Upon arrival we were hit with “resort fees” I booked 6 rooms here and we were all robbed at check in.told them Expedia showed our resort fee would be significantly less per room and they denied ever receiving money from Expedia and they didn’t know who that was. Staff was unhelpful and rude at front desk. Definitely not worth the price, please don’t waste your time and HARD EARNED MONEY at a place like this. Nothing special about this resort, only one place to choose from to eat WITH reservation only. Which one night they lost our reservation for 17 people and basically shrugged their shoulders when we asked where to eat. No night time entertainment either. BORING place to stay at.

We stayed 10 nights at Mahekal. It’s definitely different from our usual pick - the Royal Hidaway- but we wanted a change. It’s a 4 or 3.5 star resort that needs a bit of a TLC, but it didn’t bother us. The noise didn’t bother us either, very reasonable. Mosquitos are relentless, very grateful for the Off provided in each room. Staff are very friendly and polite. The welcome at the reception needs improvement. Important to give folks the room that was advertised and paid for. After travelling for 16 hrs, walking to the Oasis part in the heat, then walking back to complain about the room is not great. Then a young person at the reception starts arguing how the resort is not under the obligation to give us the room from the picture only to be interrupted by a more experienced colleague who immediately helped us. And we received the welcome drink :) We ate outside of the resort and I fully recommend it. The resort location is excellent and the 38th street has great restaurants. We only had lunches at Fuego and the food was not great. Starbucks on the property is amazing and Cesar rocks - so friendly! What we liked the most is the Oasis part of the resort and the small pool there, which was mostly empty. We enjoyed the jungle and that pool so much! If everything else was not good we’d still be happy with this vacation due to our room balcony and that pool. I recommend Mahekal, but be aware, you will not find the ACed lobby etc. If you like bohemian, it’s a place to be!
