Apex Grassmarket Hotel

The Hotel was clean, the staff was friendly, and the rooms were nice. We happened to visit during the 2026 European heat dome and air conditioning would been very nice.

The hotel was in an okay location. The hotel doesn’t have AC but they do have a table fan to use. The curtains need to stay open so you can get a small amount of air. Since the windows need to be open it gets a little noisy and you can’t block the light since the curtains have to stay open. The staff were very helpful. The breakfast was good. I guess if you went in the colder months the hotel would be okay.

If you want to be in a great location in Edinburgh, this is it. We had four families. Including 7 children. They loved the pool and being right in the Grassmarket under the Castle, near Victoria Street, the fabulous Museum of Scotland and Greyfriars Kirk. Staff were so professional and kind. We were there during a heat wave, and missed air conditioning, but got by with the fans. Definitely recommend!

Good breakfast, helpful staff, excellent amenities

The staff were truly wonderful and made our stay very welcoming; they are definitely the highlight of this hotel. Our room was clean and well-maintained, though it is worth noting that there is no air conditioning. While I understand this is customary for the area, it was unusually hot during our visit, which made sleeping a bit difficult. A few areas could use some improvement: the carpets on the second floor are in need of a deep cleaning. Also, our room faced the courtyard, so we could smell cigarette smoke when the window was open, and the noise from the courtyard could be heard clearly until people went inside for the night. If you stay here, you may want to keep this in mind if you prefer to sleep with the window open. The breakfast buffet was decent overall. Despite these minor issues, the exceptional service from the staff makes this place a great choice.

We stayed at Apex Grassmarket Hotel for one night, and it was a good base for exploring Edinburgh. The location is excellent, with beautiful views overlooking Grassmarket and Edinburgh Castle. It’s within easy walking distance of cafés, restaurants, shops, and many of the city’s main attractions, making it very convenient for sightseeing. The room itself was very basic with two beds—comfortable enough for a short stay but nothing particularly memorable or luxurious. One challenge during our visit was that there was no air conditioning or fans. We happened to be there during an unusually warm spell, and the room became extremely hot, which made it difficult to get comfortable. The hotel has a bar on site, but there wasn’t breakfast or dinner available during our stay. There are plenty of nearby restaurants, though, so this wasn’t a major issue. Drinking water is available from a refill station in the hallway, which was convenient. Overall, if you’re looking for a hotel with a fantastic location and great views, Apex Grassmarket is a solid choice. Just be aware that the rooms are fairly basic, and if you’re visiting during warmer weather, the lack of air conditioning may affect your comfort.

Prime location, comfortable beds and ample room size. Breakfast options plentiful!

All great, the lifts are a tad slow but not too bad!

Overall the property is good. Very convenient area for touring the city. Good restaurant in hotel for eating. Our only complaint is that a room facing the front of the hotel is really loud till like 3am. This wouldn’t be a huge problem if the rooms had AC and you could close the windows to dilute the noise but our stay was a bit warmer and needed windows open and therefore for a family with telephone kids it was too loud. Hotel was very accommodating and moved us to rear facing room and didn’t hear a peep for last part or stay. Very much appreciated

Great setting - nice hotel overall - just happened to be there during a bit of a heatwave and the room was quite warm.

The breakfast was great. They had Greek style yogurt, which I really like, and they had nice fruit and pastries, and an also a menu that you could order from with great porridge and waffles. The staff was very helpful and they were always to be found in the hallway. My room was very, very clean and I always had cookies waiting by my coffee pot. :-) The only negative thing I can say is they did not have outlets on both sides of the bed only on one side, but other than that everything was perfect. It had a bathtub and a shower and a fan was in our room before we got there. This is a great place to stay. The location is fabulous.

No AC. Temperatures were above normal and room and hallways were very hot.

Came for the weekend as friends were attending the Critical Role event in the castle. Room was spacious, clean, inviting and well stocked. The bed was very comfortable but the pillows are horrendously soft and give no support whatsoever. We had a fan in the room, but it was not very effective and it would’ve been much better if there was aircon in the room. Breakfast was lovely but a bit pricey at £17.50 each.

Room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The room was a bit warm until we got a fan from the front desk. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Nice hotel, well-situated, but it did not have air conditioning!! And it was HOT!!! A small fan in the room does not cut it.
