Firefly (FY/FFM) is a Malaysian Low-Cost Carrier (LCC), subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines. Rather different from other LCCs in general, Firefly focuses on regional routes in Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).

Firefly is positioned as a community airline offering low price and targeting Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore as its main market. Firefly is operated by an independent management separated from Malaysia Airlines.

Firefly offers a series of qualified services: dedicated professional crew on board, free checked baggage up to 20 kg, various menu of in-flight meal. Starting November 2014, Firefly cooperates with Circle K Malaysia in serving instant meal.

Under the leadership of Ignatius Ong, Firefly won series of awards. In 2010, Firefly was awarded as Value Airline of the Year by Frost & Sullivan. In 2012, The Putra Brand Award chose Firefly as "The Most Promising Brand of The Year".

History of Firefly

Firefly was founded in 2007 as an extension of Malaysia Airlines in serving as regional low-cost carrier. Focusing on this, Firefly is known as Malaysia's first community airline.

Firefly commenced its first flight on 3 April 2007 by operating a Fokker F50 from Penang to Kota Bharu, Malaysia. The airline's headquarter in Malaysia is located in Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Skypark) in Kuala Lumpur. The hub is located in Penang International Airport in Penang Island.

On 11 Agustus 2008, Firefly replaced its Fokker 50 with five ATR 72-500s. In December 2008, Fokker F50 was discontinued. On 18 December 2012, Firefly received 20 ATR 72-600s from MASwings, another subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines. By September 2014, Firefly had operated 12 ATR72-500s.

On 8 July 2009, the flight route from Malaysia to Singapore was officially opened by serving Kuantan-Singapore. Route to Thailand was opened on 24 January 2014 by serving routes from Malaysia to Bangkok: Kota Bharu-Don Mueang.

In May 2014, Firefly signed a partnership with Indonesian airline, Citilink, subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia. The objective is to expand the Malaysia-Indonesia route network.

In Indonesia, Firefly initially served four destinations: Banda Aceh, Batam, Medan and Pekanbaru. Due to the partnership with Citilink, Firefly serves Citilink's 19 destinations in Indonesia including Jakarta, Denpasar/Bali and Yogyakarta.

Firefly Policies of Infant, Children and Pregnant Passengers

  • Children below 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult above 18 years old during the flight.
  • Baby stroller, manual wheelchair, disability aids or mobility aids are allowed to be transferred as checked baggage. No extra baggage for infant.
  • Baby stroller is not allowed in cabin.
  • Infant should be seated on adult's lap. Max. one infant for one adult.
  • Infant with the age of 9 days - 2 years (24 months) on the day of departure is charged with special fee.
  • Infant below 8 days old should be accompanied with a medical reference and Special Handling Form.
  • Pregnant passenger with pregnancy less than 27 weeks should report her condition during check-in and sign a Special Handling Form.
  • Pregnant passenger with pregnancy between 28-34 weeks should provide a medical reference from Ob-gyn and sign a Special Handling Form.
  • Pregnant passenger with pregnancy older than 35 weeks are not allowed to board the plane.
