JED Airport is King Abdulaziz International Airport, often shortened to KAIA, the main airport for Jeddah in Saudi Arabia's Makkah Province. It lies on the northern side of the city. For pilgrims from Malaysia it is the main air gateway to Makkah for Umrah and Hajj, and it is also the hub of Saudia, the national airline. Passengers use three terminals: Terminal 1, the North Terminal and the Hajj Terminal, which the airport calls the Hajj & Umrah Complex.
The airport is run by Jeddah Airports Company. Each terminal handles a different group of airlines, so the terminal printed on your e-ticket is the first thing to confirm before you leave for the airport. JED is the IATA code you will see on your booking and baggage tag, and OEJN is the ICAO code used in aviation.
Turning up at the wrong building costs time. The lists below focus on the airlines most relevant to travellers from Malaysia. Terminal assignments can change with the season, especially around Hajj, so treat your e-ticket as the final word.
Terminal 1 is the main terminal and handles both domestic and international flights. It has a mosque, a transit hotel and the Haramain High Speed Railway station. Airlines departing from Terminal 1 include:
Flights within Saudi Arabia leave from Terminal 1 too, as neither of the other terminals handles domestic services.
The Hajj Terminal handles international flights. Airlines listed at this terminal include:
Pilgrims go to the departure terminal designated for their flight. Not every pilgrim flight uses the Hajj Terminal. If you fly Malaysia Airlines, for example, you will use Terminal 1. Follow your e-ticket and the guidance of your airline or Umrah travel agent.
The North Terminal is for international flights and is used mainly by foreign airlines other than the Saudi carriers. Examples include Air Arabia, Ethiopian Airlines and IndiGo. Self-service check-in kiosks are available.
A shuttle bus links the three terminals and other key points around the airport. The same shuttle runs from Terminal 1 to the long-term car parks. Allow extra time if your onward flight leaves from a different terminal.
Many travellers head on to Makkah or Madinah after landing, while others go into Jeddah. Journey times depend on where you are going and on traffic. Fares are shown at the counter or in the app.
The Haramain station sits at Terminal 1. The line links the airport with Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and other cities along the route. It is a convenient option if you are travelling independently rather than with a tour group.
Taxis are available at the terminals for trips into Jeddah and further afield. Agree on the destination and payment method before you set off.
Private cars and on-demand shuttles can be booked through the airport's official transport page. They suit families with plenty of luggage or small groups travelling together.
Car rental is available at the airport if you would rather drive yourself.
Short-term parking is at Terminal 1, reached via Prince Majid Road. For longer trips, long-term parking is connected to Terminal 1 by shuttle bus. There is also a dedicated parking service for First and Business Class passengers, plus pick-up and drop-off areas at the terminals. Rates are set by the airport.
VIP lounges are found in all three terminals. Entry is through eligible airline memberships or card programmes. Pilgrims also have quiet lounges and rest zones set aside for them.
Shops and restaurants are spread through the terminals, so you can grab a meal or pick up essentials before boarding.
Zamzam water is sold at dedicated sales points in the terminals. Bring your passport and the Nusuk app when you buy. A wrapping service for Zamzam containers is also available. If you plan to carry Zamzam in checked baggage, check your airline's allowance before you fly.
Saudi Post (SPL) offers baggage storage and shipping at the Terminal 1 train station. Baggage wrapping is available in Terminal 1, the North Terminal and the Hajj & Umrah Complex.
The airport has a mosque with an outdoor courtyard, and the Terminal 1 mosque holds about 3,000 worshippers. Around 40 prayer rooms are spread across the terminals as well.
Rest zones for pilgrims are provided, and there are transit hotels in Terminal 1 and in the Hajj Terminal for longer waits between flights.
ATMs and currency exchange counters are found across the terminals, so you can get riyals as soon as you land. Free Wi-Fi runs on the KAIA Free Wi-Fi network with a quick registration. Charging stations and power outlets are available throughout.
Every terminal has a medical centre. In Terminal 1 it is after baggage claim. In the North Terminal it is in Arrivals before passport control, and in the Hajj & Umrah Complex it is in the Plaza between Areas D and E. Family restrooms, baby changing rooms and play areas are provided. Passengers with reduced mobility can get help from the assistance office in the check-in areas of Terminal 1 and the North Terminal.
For international flights, arrive at least 3 hours before departure. For domestic flights within Saudi Arabia, 2 hours before departure is the guide.
The airport currently asks passengers flying to destinations affected by ongoing regional events to check with their airline before heading to the airport. This is a temporary advisory, so look for your airline's latest update.
