This place is a seaport, urban and industrial area in the Núi Thành District, Quảng Nam Province. During the Vietnam War, this port town was a military base for the US Marine Corp and acting as a supplemental airfield to their main base in Da Nang. There are some places rewarded as the UNESCO World Heritage at this place including My Son Sanctuary and also the pristine beaches of Tam Ky.
This airport is near to the Tam Kỳ city, the largest city in the Quảng Nam Province. It is precisely located at Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, Núi Thành District. Before this, the airport was nearly abandoned after the fall of Saigon and only used irregularly for military flights. However, on March 22, 2005, the first commercial flight from Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport landed here. As of 2008, this airport is the largest airfield in Vietnam.
