Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and one of the most photographed cities in India. Its old walled quarter is painted in a warm terracotta shade, which gave it the name Pink City, and the hills around it are crowned with forts and palaces built by the Rajput rulers. Together with Delhi and Agra, Jaipur forms the famous Golden Triangle, so many travellers from Malaysia book flights to Jaipur as the first or last stop of a longer North India trip. Others come for textiles, gemstones and block-printed fabrics, which the city has traded for centuries.
Jaipur International Airport (JAI) sits in Sanganer, on the southern side of the city. It is the main air gateway for Rajasthan, with domestic routes from across India and a smaller set of international services, many of them to the Gulf. Because it lies within the city limits, the airport is easy to reach from most neighbourhoods.
The airport has more than one terminal building, and domestic and international flights have at times been handled from different buildings. Check the terminal shown on your e-ticket and tell your driver before you set off, because the buildings are separate and have their own drop-off points.
Prepaid taxi counters in the arrivals hall are the simplest option for first-time visitors, with fixed fares to your area. App-based cabs are also widely used in Jaipur and pick up from designated zones outside the terminal. Auto-rickshaws can be found on the main road beyond the airport gate. If you are staying in the old city, allow extra time at busy hours, as traffic around the gates of the walled quarter can be slow.
Routes between Malaysia and Jaipur change from season to season. Nonstop options from Kuala Lumpur are limited and vary with airline schedules, so many itineraries connect through a large Indian hub such as Delhi or Mumbai, or through a Gulf airport. On the results page, switch on the direct filter to see whether a nonstop KL to Jaipur flight is available on your dates, then compare it with one-stop options, which can sometimes be the better value.
If you are travelling the Golden Triangle, think about flying into one city and out of another. A multi-city search lets you land in Jaipur and leave from Delhi, which saves a long backtrack by road or rail. When you connect within India on separate tickets, leave a generous gap between flights and check whether you need to collect and re-check your bags.
Jaipur has a semi-arid climate with three clear seasons. October to March is the most comfortable period, with warm, sunny days and cool evenings, and it is also peak season for tourism. April to June is very hot and dry, while the monsoon from about July to September brings short, heavy showers and greener hills. The winter months see the most visitors, so book early if you want the best choice of flights.
For Malaysian travellers, the year-end school holidays and the Deepavali break are popular times to head to India, and demand for flights to Jaipur rises around those dates. Deepavali is celebrated in Jaipur too, with the bazaars strung with lights, while Holi and the kite-flying festival in January also draw big crowds. Watch the monthly fare chart on this page and set a Price Alert to catch better-value dates before they fill up.
Rising above Maota Lake on the road north of the city, Amber Fort (also written Amer) is a vast complex of sandstone and marble courtyards, halls and mirror-lined chambers. Arrive early in the day to explore before the heat and the crowds build up.
The Palace of Winds is Jaipur's best-known facade, a honeycomb of small latticed windows designed so royal women could watch street life unseen. It looks its best in soft morning light from the cafes across the road.
In the heart of the old city, the City Palace is still partly home to the former royal family, with museums of costumes and arms. Next door, Jantar Mantar is a UNESCO-listed observatory of giant stone astronomical instruments.
Perched on the ridge above the city, Nahargarh is the place to watch the sun set over Jaipur. The views across the rooftops of the Pink City are especially memorable in the cool winter evenings.
The old city's bazaars are packed with jewellery, gemstones, block-printed cotton, blue pottery and leather slippers. Bargaining is expected, and wandering the arcades is an experience in itself.
The walled old city and the lanes just outside its gates put you close to Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and the bazaars, and many heritage havelis have been turned into guesthouses here. Bani Park and Civil Lines are quieter residential areas a short ride away. C-Scheme and MI Road are central and well connected, with plenty of restaurants and shops. If you have an early flight, Malviya Nagar and the areas around Tonk Road are closer to Jaipur International Airport.
The signature dish of Rajasthan combines baked wheat dumplings, spiced lentils and a sweet crumble of wheat, ghee and sugar. It is hearty and best shared.
A fiery mutton curry coloured deep red by local chillies, laal maas is a Rajput classic. Ask for it milder if you are not used to strong heat.
These flaky fried pastries filled with spiced onion are a favourite breakfast snack in Jaipur, often eaten with tamarind chutney from busy street stalls.
Ghewar is a disc-shaped sweet made from fried batter soaked in syrup, popular during the monsoon festivals. Wash it down with a thick glass of lassi served in a clay cup.
Jaipur rewards travellers who give it a few days, and it pairs beautifully with the rest of Rajasthan. When your dates are set, search flights to Jaipur on Traveloka and keep Easy Reschedule and 24/7 customer service in your back pocket in case plans shift.
