Kijal is a mukim placed under the jurisdiction of the district of Kemaman, Terengganu, Malaysia. It is administered by the Kemaman Municipal Council. The district in overall is the second most populated place in the state after Kuala Terengganu, this is due to the discovery of oil in the 1970s. As such, the major economic drivers of the area are oil and petroleum which have attracted people from all over the country to immigrate to Kijal and the surrounding areas. Kijal houses the Terengganu Petroleum Refineries which is owned by Petronas. In addition to that, the presence of natural gas has also triggered the expansion of iron and steel industries in the area, primarily driven by Perwaja.

Nonetheless the traditional industries such as fishing and salted fish manufacturing too are not lacking, in fact they thrived with the seafood produces being exported throughout the whole country and the neighbouring state city of Singapore. Tourism-wise, Kijal in specific and Kemaman in general have been well recognized for their food-based tourism. Some of the food discovered here, especially the local delicacies such as keropok lekor, satar, otak-otak and lemang are unique to only Kemaman in comparison to those being sold in other parts of Terengganu such as Kuala Terengganu. They are also being produced commercially and packaged in Kijal and other parts of Terengganu such as Chukai and Kemasik, hence visitors can look forward to bring some of the good stuffs back home. Moreover, Kijal is also frequented by visitors due to the nearby firefly colony in Yak Yah river and bright lights coming from the petrochemical industries at night, both of which offered spectacular night views to ponder upon.

How to Get There

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive via E8 route for immediate access to Kijal. The journey could take up around 3 hours and 30 minutes depending on the traffic.

By Bus

The express bus terminal is located at Kampung Geliga Cik Akob, Kemaman. Take the trip directly to Kemaman from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) terminal using express bus services such as Express Kesatuan or Transnational Express before opting for taxi or local buses to go to Kijal.

This beautifully constructed mosque is located in Jalan Mengkuang 2. The mosque is newly built to replace the earlier mosque located on the same site which was in old condition.

Telok Kalong Beach

This is one of the rarely touched beaches in Kijal and is popular among locals due to its pristine white sandy beaches and beautiful sight of the blue sea. Located around seven kilometres from Kijal, fishermen returning from sea and surfers testing their skills are nothing but a common sight to this beach. Due to its beauty, this beach is perfect for sightseeing and picnicking with families.
