About

Nibong Tebal is a town situated in South Seberang Perai district of Penang and located at the North South Highway and the expressway (Jawi exit). It is the largest town in South Seberang Perai district. The majority of Chinese who stay here speak Teow Chew instead of the Hokkien which is commonly used on Penang Island. Nibong Tebal is the last major township in southern Penang Mainland, close to the border with Kedah and Perak. On the east side of Nibong Tebal is the Bukit Panchor Industrial Estate. Furthest east, at the border with Kedah, is Bukit Panchor State Park. The most famous person to come from Nibong Tebal is the late Professor Chin Fung Kee, who designed the first Penang Bridge. Unfortunately he passed away before the bridge was opened to the public.

How to Get There

By Air

You can take Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Malindo Air flight to Penang International Airport where the flights fly to Penang regularly. Once you reach airport you may take bus or taxi to Nibong Tebal where the journey is 43 minutes’ drive away.

By Car

If you travel from Kuala Lumpur you may use North-South Expressway to reach Nibong Tebal. Continue the highway until you take Exit 156 (Jawi Interchange). The journey from Kuala Lumpur takes 3 hour 10 minutes’ drive away.

By Train

You may take ETS train from Kuala Lumpur Station Sentral to Nibong Tebal train station. The journey takes 3 hour 40 minutes to reach Nibong Tebal.

Tourist Attractions

99-Door Mansion

The 99-Door Mansion is one of prime tourist destination in Nibong Tebal that you shouldn’t miss. This Mansion is an early 20th century estate manor in Nibong Tebal, Seberang Perai. According to the number on top of the house, it was built in 1917. The two-storey mansion has ten rooms and is said to have a total of ninety doors. The 99-Door Mansion is located in the midst of Byram Estate, an estate which began as a sugarcane plantation in the 19th century.

Sungai Kerian

Fireflies watching at Sungai Kerian is one of the tourist destinations that many visitors as a ‘must visit’ tourist attraction. In fact, the firefly is an icon of Nibong Tebal. There are fewer fireflies on rainy nights and during full moon nights. Do take note that the best time for fireflies watching would be one to four hours after sunset. Visitors can also enjoy taking on a river cruise in the evening among the mangrove swamps, watching the sunset, visiting the fish farm and feeding the fish. You can experience a romantic sunset view cruise towards the river mouth of the Sungai Kerian. That romance begins as the fireflies of Sungai Kerian glow in a symphony of lights as they try to attract their mates.

Bukit Panchor State Park

Bukit Panchor Forest Park is a small but well-developed recreation park. Bukit Panchor Forest Park is an 8-hectare lowland forest located in Nibong Tebal near Seberang Perai. With flowing river and lush vegetation, the forest provides a welcome respite from the hectic city life. Bukit Panchor is really worth visiting where you can see unique mangrove life forms, bat caves and a wetland boardwalk. Among the facilities provided at the state park are vast picnic areas, playgrounds, picturesque streams and rest huts for visitors who want to spend time with their families there.

Nibong Tebal Iron Bridge

Nibong Tebal Iron Bridge is a steel arch bridge in Nibong Tebal. It is located on the northern approach to Nibong Tebal on Federal Route 1. It is one of several arch bridges on the highway. The Nibong Tebal Iron Bridge was built as an overpass to the railway tracks that run under it. The Nibong Tebal Railway Station is just about 150 meters from the bridge.

Nibong Tebal Sunday Market

You may enjoy shopping at Nibong Tebal Night Market, is one of the main tourist attractions in Nibong Tebal. The market comes alive every night as vendors set up stalls along this stretch offering everything such as imitation designer bags, cheap pirate DVDs, local food, local souvenirs and local artwork.
