Muallim is the latest constituency and the eleventh district of the state of Perak, Malaysia. Located at the southeast part of the state, the district consists of Slim, West Ulu Bernam and East Ulu Bernam. It has just been recently proclaimed as a new district by the present Perak ruler, Sultan Nazrin Shah in 11th of January, 2016 – it is only about a year old since then! The district is named as such as a reference to “muallim”, an Arabic word that carries the meaning of a teacher, which carries a significant meaning considering the Sultan Idris Education University being placed in this district. This university has a long standing of producing a lot of teachers since the colonial era of the country. Prior to the upgrade as an established district, the area is known as Tanjung Malim and is placed under the administration of Batang Padang district. It is expected with the elevated status as a fully-fledged district, the development work will be sped up with the installation of Nor Sham Rahman as its own district officer (DO). The DO is responsible to oversee the projects in the district that are suitable to live up the aspirations of the meaning behind the “muallim” word. In this manner, a plethora of opportunities will not be entitled exclusively to the people at the state capital, but also to the people all over the state, which includes this region.
