Overview of Sabah Oriental Hotel

Nestled in the heart of Kota Kinabalu's bustling city centre,

Sabah Oriental Hotel

stands as a well-established 3.5-star property that has long served as a comfortable base for travellers exploring the capital of Malaysian Borneo. Located along

Jalan Haji Saman

, the hotel offers 196 well-appointed rooms within easy reach of the waterfront, local markets, and the vibrant culinary scene that Kota Kinabalu is renowned for. Whether you are in town for a business engagement, a family holiday, or gearing up for an adventure to Mount Kinabalu or the nearby islands, this hotel provides a reliable blend of comfort, convenience, and value that appeals to a broad spectrum of guests.

What sets Sabah Oriental Hotel apart from many properties in its category is the breadth of facilities it offers. Guests can enjoy a

swimming pool

, a

fitness centre

, a

sauna

, and even a

spa

— amenities more commonly associated with higher-tier hotels. The property also features an on-site restaurant, round-the-clock front desk service, and complimentary WiFi, ensuring that both leisure and business travellers have everything they need without stepping outside. The hotel's central positioning means that key Kota Kinabalu landmarks, shopping districts, and transport links are just minutes away on foot.

Over the years, Sabah Oriental Hotel has built a steady reputation among domestic and international visitors for its warm Sabahan hospitality and practical approach to guest comfort. The staff are known for their willingness to assist with tour bookings, airport transfers, and local recommendations, making it particularly suitable for first-time visitors to Kota Kinabalu who appreciate a helping hand in navigating the region's many attractions. With standard check-in at

14:00

and check-out at

12:00

, guests benefit from a generous morning to prepare for onward travel or squeeze in one last exploration before departure.

Room Types at Sabah Oriental Hotel

Sabah Oriental Hotel offers three distinct room categories across its 196 rooms, each designed to cater to different travel needs and budgets. All rooms come equipped with

air-conditioning

, in-room WiFi access, and essential amenities to ensure a restful stay in Kota Kinabalu's warm tropical climate.

Superior Room

The

Superior Room

is the hotel's entry-level accommodation and an excellent choice for budget-conscious travellers or solo visitors who want a clean, comfortable space without unnecessary frills. These rooms are thoughtfully furnished with either a double bed or twin beds, catering to couples and friends travelling together alike. Each Superior Room features air-conditioning, a private bathroom with hot and cold shower facilities, a flat-screen television, a work desk, and complimentary WiFi. Wardrobe space, a minibar or mini-fridge, and tea and coffee making facilities round out the room's practical amenities. The Superior Room is ideal for guests who plan to spend most of their time exploring Kota Kinabalu and simply need a dependable retreat at the end of the day.

Deluxe Room

For travellers seeking a step up in space and comfort, the

Deluxe Room

delivers a more spacious layout with enhanced furnishings. These rooms typically feature a larger sleeping area with a choice of king-sized or twin bed configurations, making them suitable for couples and families with young children. Beyond the standard amenities found in the Superior category, Deluxe Rooms benefit from upgraded bedding, additional seating areas, and a more expansive bathroom. Guests in Deluxe Rooms can also expect better views of the surrounding cityscape, depending on the floor and orientation. The added comfort makes this category particularly popular with leisure travellers who value having ample room to unwind after a day of island-hopping or trekking. Air-conditioning, WiFi, a television, a writing desk, and daily housekeeping are all included as standard.

Suite

The

Suite

at Sabah Oriental Hotel represents the property's premium offering and is designed for guests who desire generous living space and a touch of luxury during their stay. Suites feature a separate living area distinct from the bedroom, providing a comfortable environment for relaxation, in-room meetings, or family downtime. The bedroom is fitted with a plush king-sized bed and premium linens, while the living area includes a sofa, coffee table, and extended seating. Bathroom facilities in the Suite are notably more refined, often including a bathtub alongside a walk-in shower. Additional perks may include bathrobes, slippers, an enhanced minibar selection, and preferential views of Kota Kinabalu city or the South China Sea. The Suite is an outstanding choice for honeymooners, business executives, or anyone celebrating a special occasion in Sabah's capital.

Facilities and Amenities

One of the standout qualities of Sabah Oriental Hotel is the range of facilities available to guests, which comfortably exceeds what many travellers expect from a 3.5-star property. The hotel's

outdoor swimming pool

provides a refreshing escape from Kota Kinabalu's tropical heat, offering sun loungers and a poolside area where guests can relax with a drink in hand. The pool is suitable for both adults and older children, making it a popular gathering spot for families during the late afternoon.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the hotel's

fitness centre

, which is equipped with cardio machines and basic weight-training equipment for guests who wish to maintain their workout routine while travelling. Complementing the gym is a

sauna

facility, perfect for easing tired muscles after a long day of sightseeing or hiking. For a more indulgent experience, the on-site

spa

offers a menu of treatments ranging from traditional massages to body scrubs, providing a welcome dose of pampering without leaving the hotel grounds.

Practical amenities are equally well covered. The hotel provides

on-site parking

for guests travelling by car or rental vehicle, a significant convenience in Kota Kinabalu's busy city centre where public parking can be limited. A

24-hour front desk

ensures assistance is always at hand, whether guests need help with an early morning airport transfer or a late-night query.

Elevator access

is available throughout the building, and

complimentary WiFi

keeps guests connected in their rooms and across common areas. These combined facilities make Sabah Oriental Hotel a well-rounded base that caters to both relaxation and productivity.

Location and Getting There

Sabah Oriental Hotel enjoys a

prime location in Kota Kinabalu City Centre

, placing guests at the doorstep of the city's most popular attractions, dining streets, and shopping destinations. The hotel's address on Jalan Haji Saman positions it within comfortable walking distance of the

Kota Kinabalu waterfront

, where visitors can enjoy sunset views over the South China Sea, browse handicraft markets, and find boat operators for day trips to the

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

islands.

From

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI)

, the hotel is approximately

8 kilometres

away, which translates to a drive of around 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Grab are readily available at the airport, with fares starting from approximately

RM 30 to RM 40

for the journey to the city centre. The hotel's front desk can also arrange airport transfer services for guests who prefer a pre-booked pickup upon arrival.

Within the immediate vicinity of the hotel, guests will find an array of attractions and conveniences. The

Gaya Street Sunday Market

, one of Kota Kinabalu's most beloved weekly events, is a short stroll away, offering everything from local produce and street food to handmade crafts and souvenirs. Major shopping centres including

Suria Sabah

and

Wisma Merdeka

are within walking distance, providing air-conditioned retail therapy, cinema options, and diverse food courts. The

Sabah State Museum

and

Atkinson Clock Tower

, one of the oldest structures in the city, are also easily accessible for guests with an interest in local history and culture. For those planning excursions further afield, tour operators based in the city centre can arrange trips to

Kundasang

, the

Kinabalu National Park

,

Sandakan

, and the

Klias Wetlands

.

Dining at Sabah Oriental Hotel

Sabah Oriental Hotel features an

on-site restaurant

that serves a variety of local and international dishes, ensuring guests have a convenient dining option without needing to leave the premises. The restaurant is particularly valued for its

breakfast service

, where guests can fuel up before a day of exploration with a spread that typically includes both Western staples — such as toast, eggs, and cereals — and Malaysian favourites like nasi lemak, roti canai, and fresh tropical fruits. This blend of cuisines reflects Kota Kinabalu's multicultural identity and caters well to both domestic and overseas visitors.

Beyond breakfast, the restaurant offers lunch and dinner menus that showcase Sabahan and wider Malaysian cooking. Guests can sample dishes featuring fresh seafood, a hallmark of Kota Kinabalu's culinary heritage, alongside rice-based meals, noodle dishes, and a selection of vegetable options. The restaurant provides a relaxed and informal atmosphere suitable for families and business diners alike.

For guests who wish to venture out, the surrounding neighbourhood is a

paradise for food lovers

. The nearby waterfront area and Jalan Gaya are lined with restaurants, kopitiam (traditional coffee shops), and hawker-style eateries serving some of the best seafood in Sabah. Local specialities worth seeking out include

hinava

(a traditional Kadazan raw fish salad),

tuaran mee

(handmade egg noodles), and

grilled seafood platters

at the Filipino Market or Sedco Square night market. Street food stalls offering satay, laksa, and rojak are abundant throughout the area, with most dishes available from approximately

RM 5 to RM 15

per serving, representing excellent value for money.

Why Stay at Sabah Oriental Hotel

Unbeatable city centre location.

Few hotels in Kota Kinabalu place you as close to the action as Sabah Oriental Hotel. With the waterfront, markets, shopping malls, and boat jetties all within walking distance, guests can maximise their time exploring rather than commuting. This central positioning is especially valuable for short stays where every hour counts.

Facilities that punch above their weight.

A swimming pool, fitness centre, sauna, and spa are not amenities you always find at a 3.5-star hotel. Sabah Oriental Hotel offers all four, giving guests the option to relax and rejuvenate on-site without paying premium-tier prices. Whether it is a post-hike massage or a morning swim, these extras add genuine value to any stay.

A practical base for Sabah adventures.

Kota Kinabalu is the gateway to some of Borneo's most iconic experiences — from climbing Mount Kinabalu to snorkelling off Manukan Island and visiting the proboscis monkeys at Klias River. The hotel's location and helpful front desk make it straightforward to arrange tours, transfers, and day trips to all major Sabah attractions, often at competitive rates.

Warm and attentive service.

Guest reviews consistently highlight the friendliness and helpfulness of the hotel staff, who go out of their way to accommodate requests and offer genuine local recommendations. This personal touch can make a significant difference, particularly for first-time visitors to Sabah who appreciate guidance on where to eat, what to see, and how to get around.

Solid value across all room categories.

Whether you opt for the budget-friendly Superior Room or treat yourself to the spacious Suite, Sabah Oriental Hotel delivers reliable comfort and cleanliness. The property represents a strong middle ground for travellers who want more than a basic budget hotel but do not need the expense of a five-star resort, making it a sensible choice for both short city breaks and longer Sabah itineraries.

Tips for Booking Sabah Oriental Hotel

Book early for peak season travel.

Kota Kinabalu experiences its highest visitor numbers between

November and March

, coinciding with the year-end holiday season and favourable weather conditions. During these months, Sabah Oriental Hotel's 196 rooms can fill up quickly, particularly over Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year. Booking well in advance — ideally four to six weeks ahead — ensures you secure your preferred room type and often access better rates through Traveloka's early booking deals.

Consider midweek stays for better value.

Like most city centre hotels in Kota Kinabalu, rates at Sabah Oriental Hotel tend to be more competitive on weekday nights compared to weekends, when domestic visitors and short-break travellers drive up demand. If your itinerary is flexible, arriving on a Sunday or Monday and departing midweek can yield meaningful savings that you can redirect towards tours and experiences.

Request a higher floor for the best views.

When booking through Traveloka, consider adding a special request for a room on a higher floor. Upper-storey rooms at Sabah Oriental Hotel are more likely to offer views of the city or glimpses of the sea, enhancing the overall experience without any additional cost. While such requests are subject to availability, the hotel generally does its best to accommodate them.

Take advantage of the on-site facilities.

Build some downtime into your itinerary to make the most of the swimming pool, spa, and sauna. Many guests focus so heavily on external activities that they overlook the relaxation options within the hotel itself. A spa treatment after a day of trekking or island-hopping can be the perfect way to recharge, and booking treatments upon arrival helps secure your preferred time slot.

Use the front desk for tour arrangements.

Rather than searching for tour operators independently, ask the hotel's 24-hour front desk for recommendations and bookings. The staff are well-connected with reputable local operators and can often arrange competitive packages for popular excursions to

Kinabalu National Park

,

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

, and the

Klias River

. This can save both time and effort, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the area and want peace of mind that you are booking with a trusted provider.

The good - Breakfast in average was good. Fried bihun was good. Check in process was smooth and very swift. Staff are friendly. Price wise is quite cheap as compared to other hotels. Great location. Parking is ample. The hotel condition is acceptable with areas for improvement. Room is spacious and the best thing was all rooms has bath-tub. Room wasn't using carpet, which is great. Air conditioner in the room was even better than most hotel I went, as the controller actually works! The not so good - The hotel is a bit run down, and most of the facilities are due for replacement. The key lock on my door was not tight. Wifi was not stable. The bath have no stopper (which they replace immediately upon request). The linen was very old, and the curtain already critically worn out and needs to be replaced. Breakfast, even it was good, can be improved. Food was being top up immediately, no one man the egg station and most tables don't have silverwares unless you request it (we come for breakfast at 9am). No plain water as beverages option. Swimming pool closed at 6pm, which is too early.

They had issues with the online system and it continued to overbook guests. We successfully booked and paid 2 weeks in advance, but was still turned away, similar to many other guests at the lobby. In the end around 8pm they managed to get us a room, but due to overcrowding, no toiletries (no towels to shower but extra toilet paper given?). There were tea/coffee utilities but no hot water kettle available. Breakfast was good with wide selection and omelette station. Overall bad experience, but appreciate the hotel trying their best to accommodate the overcrowded occupancy caused by the technical error. Will consider coming again if no overcrowding.

I'm just arrived, have checked in, when I asked for WiFi password he said currently we have no WiFi access in room due to internal issue. Have go to lobby. I'm very disappointed because as business traveler I really need WiFi. As 4 star hotel with no WiFi access it's no meaning. Better go to 1 star hotel with WiFi access with cheaper price. I have paid for 5 night already. Oh my God!

Arrived around 8 PM and the check-in was smooth. Got room on high floor as per requested. Nice view from room. Breakfast also good, lots of choice. Overall it was a good business stay here.

It's like you don't have to welcome just from entering again. Pick up your own bags from the car.

Location beside syria sabah mall. Just toilet look old, and room lighting is very bad! Please improve of the lighting of room. The front staff is very friendly. Parking is very limited. Forced to park at the Suria Sabah mall for 25 hours, rm22. That's okay too.

Oh my God!
