Your Travel Guide to Langkawi as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is straightforward, with several convenient options available. The most popular method is by air. Numerous daily flights operate from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang to Langkawi International Airport (LGK). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares varying based on the airline and booking time, often ranging from MYR 150 to MYR 400 for a round trip. You can book flight tickets easily through Traveloka.

For those who prefer a more scenic and potentially budget-friendly journey, traveling by bus is an option, though it involves a ferry transfer. You can take a bus from Kuala Lumpur or other cities to Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah on the mainland, and then board a ferry to Langkawi. Bus tickets usually cost between MYR 40 to MYR 70, and ferry tickets are around MYR 20-30 one way. The total travel time can extend to 6-8 hours, making it a journey for those with ample time.

Driving to Langkawi is also feasible for those who enjoy road trips. You can drive your own vehicle to Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah and then take a car ferry to the island. The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis is approximately 5-6 hours, covering about 450-500 kilometers. Toll charges along the North-South Expressway will add to the cost, estimated to be around MYR 50-70 for a one-way trip. Car ferry fares are higher, typically around MYR 150-200 for a car and driver.

Best Time to Visit Langkawi

Langkawi enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures hovering around 28-30°C. The island experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from December to February, is considered the peak tourist period. During these months, you can expect plenty of sunshine, lower humidity, and calm seas, making it ideal for beach activities and water sports.

The shoulder months, from March to May and September to November, offer a good balance. While there might be occasional rain showers, they are usually brief and don't significantly disrupt travel plans. These periods often see fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering great value for money.

The wet season, typically from June to August and October to November, sees more frequent rainfall. However, the rain often comes in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon or evening, followed by sunshine. This season is perfect for travelers seeking a quieter experience, lush green landscapes, and the lowest prices for flights and accommodation. The sea can be a bit rougher during this time, which might affect some boat tours.

Food and Dining Near Langkawi — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Langkawi, like the rest of Malaysia, is a food lover's destination, offering a diverse range of local delicacies that reflect the country's multicultural heritage. One dish you absolutely must try is Nasi Lemak, Malaysia's national dish. It features fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with spicy sambal, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and a hard-boiled egg. Many local eateries and cafes in Langkawi serve excellent versions of this breakfast staple.

Another popular choice is Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried flat rice noodle dish cooked over high heat with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, chives, and dark soy sauce. The smoky flavor, known as 'wok hei', is what makes this dish so addictive. You can find this at many hawker stalls and casual restaurants across the island. For a lighter yet equally satisfying option, try Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with dhal (lentil curry) or other curries. It's a breakfast and supper favorite.

Seafood lovers will be in their element in Langkawi, with fresh catches readily available. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often marinated in local spices, are a must-try. Many restaurants along the coast offer a wide selection of seafood prepared in various styles. Don't forget to sample Laksa, a spicy noodle soup that varies by region but is always a flavorful experience. In Langkawi, you might find a local variation that's particularly delicious.

For a quick and tasty snack or meal, Satay is a fantastic option. These marinated and grilled skewers of chicken or beef, served with a rich peanut sauce, are a beloved Malaysian treat. You can find them at night markets and many food stalls. When exploring these culinary delights, remember that most local eateries are halal-certified or follow halal practices, making it easy for Muslim travelers to enjoy the authentic flavors of Malaysia.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Langkawi

Langkawi is a Muslim-majority island, and while it's a popular tourist destination, respecting local customs and traditions is important. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites or less tourist-oriented areas. Casual wear is generally acceptable for most tourist activities, but it's advisable to cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques or local villages.

Safety in Langkawi is generally high, with low crime rates. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For any emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly recommended for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation across the island. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for cashless payments at many establishments and for topping up toll cards. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking into certain venues. Having these apps on your smartphone will make navigating Langkawi much smoother and more efficient.

Hotel reviews of the Langkawi Hotel tomato we checked in at 10 a.m. It is not difficult to find this hotel, just look for the restaurant nasi nasi tomato, reception is on the right side of the restaurant, the rooms are above it. The location of the hotel at Cenang Beach intersection, adjacent to Arsenia Resort and Lubuk Buaya Restaurant. (if using the airport from grab, just type the rice drive tomato). Previously when booking in the application, we had written the hours to check in, so the reception already knew & immediately remembered our names. Reception of a girl of South Asian descent, accepts us kindly & can speak Malay. We ordered for 3 nights (16-19 oct 2018), requested a 50 rm deposit (returned intact at check out). Reception told us that the standard queen room we ordered was not available, so we accepted the standard twin type offered in room 111 number. The room size is quite spacious. Some of the equipment available in the room include; - twin mattresses - pillows 2 - thick blankets 2 - nightstand cabinets - hangings for clothes - small wardrobe / clothes rack - safe (not used) - long table with drawers - dining table & 3 minimalist wooden chairs - mirror - refrigerator (functioning with well) - electric kettle (works properly) - tissue box - cup, spoon and placemat 2 set - tray - coffee sachet 2 pcs - mineral water 600 ml 2 bottles - trash can - ac + remote (works properly) - led tv 30 inch + remote (works properly) - astro + remote (works properly) - window facing the back of the toiletries hotel provided: - clean towels 2 - liquid bath soap - shower cap 2 - plastic hygiene bag 2 - glasses toothbrush 2 - sink - mirror - toilet seat - toilet paper - trash can - hot water shower - clothes hanger rack - bath mat every day room in cleaning room, towel & mat replaced, mattress & blanket trimmed, mineral water given every day. The used shower cap is replaced new. There are no mosquitoes, ants, or even roaches roaming around. Wifi is available and quite fast in room 111 where I live. If you want to eat anytime there is a 24-hour restaurant right below the hotel. Either midnight, at dawn, noon is always crowded with people. The menu is available in various kinds, tastes good & cheap, but mostly Indian & Middle Eastern foods. Suitable for food lovers who like concentrated spices on the tongue. Other options are standard, there are various kinds of chicken fried rice or Pattaya fried rice. Regular white drinking water is provided free with self service. For food, there is a self service, someone has to order through the waiter. The billing will be written by the waiter and given when our food has arrived & is paid to the cashier after eating. The price is very affordable and there is a 10% discount for hotel guests (given the card that must be shown to the cashier every time you want to pay). The waiters are very friendly, inviting us to speak Malay. Access from the hotel to Pantai Cenang can be a 15 minute walk, next to the Underworld Aquaria. Heading to the center of the mall will take about 30 minutes. Cenang beach road for cars is only 1 direction. For those who are looking for motorbike rental, across the hotel there are motorbike rentals & road intersections also with more motorbike choices. The minimarket is at the intersection, next to the hotel Arsenia. Conclusion we stayed 3 nights at the Langkawi tomato hotel; very satisfied. With the services provided, the price of this hotel is very cheap in the area of Cenang. We get a 10% discount booking via the application. Highly recommended for budget travelers who want the best service.

The position of the hotel is quite good (near pantai cenang beach), the room is quite clean but the wifi is so bad because they use wifi with Tomato restaurant, therefore a lot of people use it at the moment. The air condition not work correctly, it's not make the room cooler.

Not bad. It's quite near to the Chenang Beach, walk-able but we didn't walk as we want to buy chocolates & other things. Located exactly beside Aseana. Very spacious. If you feel hungry, the Nasi Kandar shop is right below your room and it's 24/7. The receptionists were very helpful and kind. No elevator and the bathroom door could not be locked. The dressing table was a bit sticky, probably too much detergent used.

Okay room. Clean. The bathroom is also just a really high shower. Unfortunately, it is a bit far from the center of Pantai Cenang. Pretty good walking too. Unless it's true that the intention to walk while washing your eyes is worth it, yeah. Maybe it can be entered in the list of recommended hotels in Langkawi.

Before staying at the hotel we had a tomato hotel call caller to switch from standard room to deluxe room and no word was charged, but until there we had to pay RM30 as an extra charge.this room was very hot and we wanted waiting for 7 hours in the room with a damaged aircond condition to move to another room, the way staffing service was hard, it was difficult to smile at us. The smile is kind of forced. We are really sorry for the hotel's sleep.
