Local Etiquette & Safety in Brunei-Muara

Navigating the cultural landscape of Brunei-Muara involves understanding and respecting local customs, which are deeply rooted in Islamic traditions and Malay culture. Modesty in dress is highly valued; while tourist areas may be more relaxed, it's advisable for both men and women to dress conservatively, covering shoulders and knees, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional neighbourhoods. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum.

When visiting key landmarks like the Brunei International Airport (BWN) or Jerudong Park, maintaining respectful behaviour is paramount. At religious sites, visitors must adhere to strict dress codes and remove their shoes before entering. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, particularly of individuals without their permission. Observing local queues and maintaining a polite demeanour are appreciated, reflecting the general sense of order and respect prevalent in Brunei.
