It was a wonderful time. At this time, I got the mountain and pool view room. It was a very nice view to see the volcanic mountain of Gamalama, in the center of Ternate Island. I saw the green side of the city. The swimming pool was big. It was a great view from the balcony of the room.

The staff at this hotel are very friendly, we were very lucky to be able to check in early (in the morning) on Saturday, December 13th, because there were guests who had already checked out, we were very helped and the hotel room was also ready, clean, and the soft fragrance of the room, as if it erased the fatigue after an early morning flight of more than 3 hours.

Understanding these regional nuances is key to crafting a personalised itinerary, ensuring that your exploration aligns with your interests, whether they lie in adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion.

From a value perspective, North Maluku stands out as an attractive destination for travellers from the US, Europe, and India. With starting prices for accommodation around ₱ 246.50 per night, it offers a significantly more affordable entry point into exploring a region rich in natural wonders and wellness opportunities compared to many other global destinations. European travellers might find its historical spice trade connections and unique cultural heritage particularly engaging. Indian travellers will appreciate the affordability, the potential for diverse culinary experiences, and the ease of access through regional flight connections. Best Areas to Stay in North Maluku

North Maluku is not a monolithic destination; it's a collection of islands and coastal areas, each with its own character and appeal. For international visitors, understanding these distinct neighbourhoods and districts is crucial, as your choice of base will significantly shape your overall travel experience. Whether you're drawn to the urban conveniences of Ternate or the remote natural beauty of its outer islands, selecting the right area ensures you're positioned to explore the province's unique offerings effectively.

Central Ternate

Getting to Central Ternate typically involves arriving at the Sultan Babullah Airport (Ternate) and taking a taxi or ride-sharing service, a journey of about 30-45 minutes, making it a practical starting point for many itineraries.

The primary draw of Weda is its proximity to natural wonders, including potential access to marine parks and trekking trails. Accommodation here tends to be more focused on nature lodges or simpler guesthouses, offering a more rustic experience. Getting to Weda usually involves a flight to Ternate followed by a ferry or a longer overland journey, making it a destination for those committed to reaching more remote natural landscapes. This area is less developed for tourism, making it ideal for those who prioritise genuine cultural encounters and serene natural landscapes. It might particularly attract adventurous travellers from the US or Europe looking for a truly immersive experience in a less commercialised setting.

Food & Dining in North Maluku

North Maluku's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of its maritime heritage and diverse cultural influences, offering a unique gastronomic journey for international visitors. The region is celebrated for its fresh seafood, often prepared with a distinct blend of local spices and traditional cooking methods. Dishes like Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) and various seafood curries are staples, showcasing the bounty of the surrounding waters. For those interested in wellness, the emphasis on fresh, natural ingredients in many local preparations aligns perfectly with healthy eating principles.

Exploring the local food scene is best done by venturing into the bustling markets and local eateries found in areas like Central Ternate and Tobelo. These places offer an authentic taste of North Maluku, from street food vendors selling grilled corn and local snacks to small warungs serving hearty meals. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal options is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most local eateries will adhere to Halal practices, often using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

The affordability of dining in North Maluku is a significant draw for international travellers. While upscale restaurants might offer international cuisine at prices comparable to Western cities, local eateries and markets provide delicious meals for as little as ₱ 50 to ₱ 150 per person. This makes it possible for travellers from the US, Europe, and India to enjoy diverse culinary experiences daily without a substantial impact on their budget, allowing for more exploration and enjoyment of the region's flavours.

When dining in North Maluku, embracing local customs enhances the experience. It's common to eat with your right hand, especially in more traditional settings, though utensils are readily available. Tipping is not a mandatory custom in most local establishments, but rounding up the bill or leaving a small gratuity for exceptional service is appreciated. Understanding these nuances can lead to more respectful and enjoyable interactions with local vendors and restaurateurs.

Local Etiquette & Safety in North Maluku

Navigating the cultural landscape of North Maluku requires an awareness of local customs to ensure respectful interactions. As a predominantly Muslim region, modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites or more conservative areas. This means covering shoulders and knees. Greetings are typically warm and friendly; a simple "Assalamualaikum" (peace be upon you) is a polite way to acknowledge locals, and responding with "Waalaikumsalam" is customary. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum.

When visiting popular spots like the areas around Manado Town Square or Bunaken National Park (though these are geographically in North Sulawesi, their mention suggests a desire for natural landmarks), respecting local norms is key. Dress modestly, particularly if visiting cultural or religious sites. Photography of people should always be done with permission. Queuing culture is generally observed, and patience is a virtue when navigating busy areas or waiting for services.

For practical safety in North Maluku, exercising standard precautions is advised. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or transport hubs. While ride-hailing apps like Grab may have limited availability in more remote areas, local taxis and motorcycle taxis (ojek) are common and generally affordable. It's wise to agree on fares beforehand or ensure the meter is used where applicable. Offline maps and translation apps can be invaluable for navigation and communication.

In case of emergencies, local police numbers are readily available through your accommodation or by asking locals. For Filipino travellers, it's always prudent to know the contact details of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in various situations. Carrying travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical needs or emergencies, ensuring a safer and more secure trip to North Maluku.

Travel Guide to North Maluku

Reaching North Maluku from the Philippines involves a journey that typically requires at least one stopover, as direct flights are uncommon. Travellers departing from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) can look for flights connecting through major hubs like Jakarta (CGK) or potentially Kuala Lumpur (KUL) before continuing to Sultan Babullah Airport (Ternate, TTE), the main gateway to the province. Flight durations can range from 8 to 15 hours or more, depending on the layovers. Estimated costs in PHP can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 for a round trip, especially if booked in advance. Booking your book flight well in advance is recommended for better pricing.

Navigating within North Maluku depends heavily on your chosen destination within the province. In Ternate, local transport includes 'bemo' (minibuses), taxis, and motorcycle taxis (ojek). Fares are generally very affordable, often costing less than 100,000 IDR (approximately ₱ 350) for short to medium distances within the city. For inter-island travel, ferries and smaller boats are essential, connecting Ternate to other islands like Halmahera and Morotai. Planning your routes and understanding local transport schedules is key to efficient travel.

The best time to visit North Maluku is generally during the dry season, which typically runs from April to October. This period offers sunny skies and calmer seas, ideal for exploring the beaches, diving, and island hopping. The wet season, from November to March, can bring heavier rainfall and rougher seas, potentially disrupting ferry services and outdoor activities. While this period might see fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, travellers seeking optimal weather for nature and beach activities should aim for the dry season.

Before departing for North Maluku, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels might accept credit cards, it's advisable to carry sufficient cash, especially when travelling to more remote areas. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for data access and local calls. Essential apps include offline maps (like Maps.me or Google Maps downloaded for offline use), a translation app, and ride-hailing apps if available in your specific destination.

Visa Information for Indonesia (North Maluku)

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit North Maluku, which is part of Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. As of current regulations, Philippine citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, typically up to 30 days, for tourism purposes. This allows for a convenient entry without the need for prior visa application. However, it is essential to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Indonesia.

The visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders is subject to specific conditions. You must be entering Indonesia for tourism or a short visit and must not intend to work or engage in any business activities. Upon arrival, immigration officials may ask for proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay. While no specific fee is associated with this visa-free entry, it is always wise to confirm the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates.

While visa-free entry is a significant convenience, policies can change. It is strongly recommended that all travellers, including Philippine passport holders, verify the most current visa requirements and entry regulations directly with the official immigration authority of Indonesia or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines well in advance of booking flights and making travel arrangements. Confirming your entry status before committing to travel plans ensures a smooth and stress-free journey to North Maluku.

The staffs are friendly and quite helpful. Room was quite clean and we chose the room with windows and view, not too small, breakfast was okay. There is a cafe down the hotel where they placed beeakfast, and we liked the dragonfruit and fried banana. The location was a good point.
