More about hotels in Japan
Choose your Japanese destinations before choosing rooms
Japan offers city hotels, traditional inns and stays built around time at the property. The first decision is where your holiday will be based. Tokyo is in the Kanto region, while Kyoto and Osaka are in Kansai; treat those parts of the journey as separate accommodation choices rather than trying to compare every Japanese hotel at once.
Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka?
Tokyo hotels suit a capital-city stay with several neighbourhoods on the itinerary. Choose the part of the city that works for your main outings, then compare hotels within that area. A familiar district name is a starting point; the property's actual address and the room offer still determine whether it suits your trip.
Kyoto accommodation makes sense when exploring Kyoto is the focus of your days. The city offers both hotels with Western furnishings and Japanese-style inns. Staying in Kyoto gives you a base within the destination itself, while a traditional inn can make the accommodation part of the experience.
Osaka hotels provide a different Kansai base. Choose Osaka when the city leads your itinerary, and compare a separate Kyoto stay when you want more time there. The useful question is where you want to start and finish each day, rather than which city has a universally better hotel.
Make room for the stay you want
A hotel works well for a trip built around going out each day. A ryokan can suit a slower part of the holiday, with time set aside for the inn and its hospitality. Japanese-style rooms may use tatami flooring and futon bedding; some properties also offer Western beds. Select the arrangement that works for your group, especially if getting up from floor-level bedding would be difficult.
For a longer visit, give each part of the route its own accommodation dates. Compare room layout, included services and guest reviews within each destination. Choose the property for the stay you intend to have, without relying on an undated national price claim or a fixed list of Japan's best hotels.
