Byodo-in is a national treasure hall that is printed on Japan’s 10-yen coin! The Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple was built by Fujiwara Yorimichi, who served as Kanpaku in the late Heian period. It is also the only precious building preserved from that era, the only one in Japan. The biggest feature of its architecture is that it is built on an island in the pool, symbolizing the appearance of the Paradise floating in the water. The vermilion carved beams and painted columns are reflected in the pool water, making the symmetrical architectural structure even more gorgeous and noble.
