More about hotels in Kyoto

Hotels in Kyoto — A Singaporean Traveller's Guide to Japan's Cultural Capital

Kyoto stands as one of the most enchanting cities in the world and consistently ranks among the top travel destinations for Singaporeans heading to Japan. As the former imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years, Kyoto is home to an extraordinary concentration of temples, shrines, traditional gardens, and historic districts that together form a living museum of Japanese culture and heritage. For Singaporean travellers, Kyoto offers an irresistible combination of cultural depth, natural beauty, and culinary excellence that makes it worth visiting at any time of the year. Booking your Kyoto hotel through Traveloka gives you access to a wide range of accommodation options at competitive prices displayed in SGD, taking the guesswork out of currency conversion and helping you plan your Japan trip with confidence.

The city offers an impressive variety of accommodation styles to suit different preferences and budgets. From traditional ryokans where you sleep on futons laid out on tatami mat floors to modern international hotels with all the amenities you would expect from a global city, Kyoto's hotel landscape is as diverse as its cultural attractions. Prices for Kyoto hotels are generally favourable for Singaporean travellers thanks to the historically strong SGD-to-JPY exchange rate, which means your Singapore dollars stretch further than you might expect. Whether you are planning a honeymoon, a family holiday, a solo adventure, or a trip with friends, Traveloka makes it simple to compare and book the ideal Kyoto accommodation for your journey.

Traditional Ryokans — The Quintessential Kyoto Experience

No trip to Kyoto is truly complete without spending at least one night in a traditional ryokan. These Japanese-style inns have been welcoming guests for centuries and offer an immersive cultural experience that goes far beyond simply having a place to sleep. At a ryokan, you will typically be greeted with tea and traditional sweets upon arrival, sleep on a comfortable futon laid out on tatami mats, bathe in an onsen or communal hot spring bath, and enjoy an elaborate multi-course kaiseki dinner featuring seasonal ingredients prepared with exquisite attention to detail. The entire experience is designed to promote relaxation, mindfulness, and an appreciation for the beauty of simplicity.

Kyoto has ryokans in every price range, from affordable family-run establishments that charge around SGD 80 | SGD 150 per person per night including meals, to ultra-luxurious properties in the Higashiyama district or along the Kamogawa River that can cost SGD 500 or more per person. For Singaporeans who are new to the ryokan experience, mid-range properties offer the best introduction as they provide all the traditional elements including kaiseki cuisine and onsen access at a price point that represents excellent value. When searching on Traveloka, look for properties that include dinner and breakfast in the room rate, as these meal-inclusive packages are often the most authentic and cost-effective way to enjoy the ryokan experience.

Modern Hotels and Convenient Stays in Central Kyoto

For travellers who prefer modern amenities and a more familiar hotel experience, Kyoto has no shortage of excellent options. The area around Kyoto Station is the city's main transport hub and offers the greatest concentration of international chain hotels, business hotels, and modern boutique properties. Staying near Kyoto Station is particularly convenient because it gives you direct access to the JR train lines, the Shinkansen bullet train, city buses, and the Kyoto subway system, making it easy to reach any part of the city or take day trips to nearby destinations like Nara and Osaka.

Hotel prices in central Kyoto typically range from SGD 80 | SGD 150 per night for clean and efficient business hotels to SGD 200 | SGD 400 per night for upscale international properties. Japanese business hotels deserve special mention as they offer outstanding value for money, with compact but immaculately maintained rooms, excellent service, and amenities such as complimentary toiletries, yukata robes, and sometimes even onsen-style baths. For Singaporean travellers who plan to spend most of their time out exploring the city, a well-located business hotel near Kyoto Station provides everything you need at a very reasonable price.

Exploring Kyoto's Magnificent Temples and Shrines

Kyoto is home to seventeen UNESCO World Heritage Sites and over two thousand temples and shrines, making it one of the most culturally significant cities on the planet. Among the most iconic is Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, whose shimmering gold-leaf exterior reflected in the surrounding mirror pond is one of the most photographed images in all of Japan. Equally mesmerising is Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its seemingly endless corridor of thousands of bright vermilion torii gates that wind up the forested slopes of Mount Inari. Walking through these gates is a spiritual and visually stunning experience that should be at the top of every visitor's itinerary.

The Higashiyama district on Kyoto's eastern side is where many of the city's most atmospheric temples and traditional streets are concentrated. Here you can visit the majestic Kiyomizu-dera, a wooden temple perched on a hillside that offers sweeping views over the city, before strolling down the charming stone-paved lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, which are lined with traditional tea houses, craft shops, and sweet stores. The Arashiyama area on the western outskirts of Kyoto is another must-visit zone, home to the iconic bamboo grove whose towering green stalks create a magical natural tunnel, as well as the serene Tenryu-ji temple and its exquisite garden. Choosing a hotel with good transport links ensures you can visit all these incredible sites without wasting time on complicated commutes.

Gion District — Geisha Culture and Traditional Entertainment

The Gion district is Kyoto's most famous geisha quarter and one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods in the entire city. Walking through the narrow streets of Gion in the early evening, you may catch a glimpse of a maiko or geiko in her elaborate kimono and white makeup making her way to an engagement at one of the district's exclusive tea houses. While these encounters are becoming rarer as the geisha tradition evolves, the district itself remains beautifully preserved with its wooden machiya townhouses, traditional restaurants, and a palpable sense of old-world elegance that transports you back in time.

Hotels and ryokans in and around Gion tend to be among the most desirable and atmospheric in Kyoto. Staying in this area puts you within walking distance of many major attractions including Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, the Hanamikoji street, and the banks of the Kamogawa River, which is particularly beautiful in the evening when the riverside restaurants light up their terraces for outdoor dining. During the summer months, many Gion restaurants set up kawadoko platforms extending over the river, offering a uniquely Kyoto dining experience that you will not find anywhere else in Japan. Accommodation in Gion ranges from SGD 120 | SGD 250 per night for mid-range properties to significantly more for luxury ryokans with private gardens.

Cherry Blossoms, Autumn Foliage, and Seasonal Beauty

One of the most compelling reasons Singaporeans travel to Kyoto is to experience the dramatic seasonal changes that simply do not exist in tropical Singapore. The cherry blossom season in late March to mid-April transforms the city into a pink and white wonderland, with hundreds of temples, parks, and river banks draped in delicate sakura blooms. Maruyama Park, the Philosopher's Path, and the Kamogawa River are among the most popular hanami spots, where locals and visitors alike gather to picnic beneath the blossoming trees. Hotels during cherry blossom season fill up extremely quickly and prices can increase significantly, so booking well in advance on Traveloka is essential if you plan to visit during this magical period.

Equally spectacular is Kyoto's autumn foliage season from mid-November to early December, when the city's countless maple trees erupt in brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. Many temples offer special evening illumination events during this period, lighting up the autumn leaves against the dark sky to create scenes of breathtaking beauty. Tofuku-ji, Eikando, and the gardens of Kiyomizu-dera are particularly renowned for their autumn colours. Summer in Kyoto brings vibrant festivals including the famous Gion Matsuri in July, while winter offers a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere with the occasional dusting of snow on temple rooftops creating postcard-perfect scenes. Each season offers a unique reason to visit, and Traveloka can help you find the best hotel deals regardless of when you choose to travel.

Practical Tips for Singaporeans Visiting Kyoto

Getting to Kyoto from Singapore is straightforward, with direct flights available to Kansai International Airport in Osaka, which is approximately 75 minutes from Kyoto by the JR Haruka Express train. Many Singaporean travellers also fly into Tokyo and take the Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto, which is an experience in itself. The Japan Rail Pass offers excellent value if you plan to travel between multiple cities. Within Kyoto, an efficient bus network and two subway lines make it easy to get around, and many of the city's most popular areas are wonderfully walkable.

The current favourable SGD-to-JPY exchange rate means that Kyoto offers exceptional value for Singaporean travellers across all categories, from accommodation and dining to shopping and transport. A hearty bowl of ramen costs the equivalent of about SGD 8 | SGD 12, a kaiseki dinner can be enjoyed from SGD 50 | SGD 80, and temple admission fees are typically SGD 3 | SGD 6. Booking your Kyoto hotel through Traveloka in SGD gives you complete price transparency and the convenience of managing your reservation through a platform you already know and trust. With hundreds of Kyoto properties available on Traveloka ranging from cosy guesthouses to world-class luxury hotels, you are sure to find the perfect base for your Kyoto adventure.

Business hotels and mid-range properties typically cost SGD 80 to SGD 200 per night. Traditional ryokans with meals range from SGD 150 to SGD 500 or more per person. Luxury hotels can cost SGD 400 and above per night.

What is a ryokan and should I stay in one in Kyoto?

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn where you sleep on futons on tatami mat floors, bathe in onsen hot spring baths, and often enjoy multi-course kaiseki meals. Staying in a ryokan is highly recommended in Kyoto as it is one of the most authentic Japanese cultural experiences available. Even one night in a ryokan adds a memorable dimension to your Kyoto trip.

When is the best time to visit Kyoto from Singapore?

The most popular times are during cherry blossom season from late March to mid-April and autumn foliage season from mid-November to early December. Both periods offer stunning natural beauty. However, these are also peak seasons with higher prices and crowds. Spring outside of peak bloom and early autumn offer pleasant weather with fewer tourists. Winter is the quietest and most affordable time to visit.

How do I get from Singapore to Kyoto?

The most common route is to fly from Singapore Changi Airport to Kansai International Airport in Osaka, then take the JR Haruka Express train to Kyoto Station which takes about 75 minutes. Alternatively, you can fly to Tokyo Narita or Haneda Airport and take the Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto in about two hours and fifteen minutes. Key sights include Hanamikoji Street, Yasaka Shrine, and the atmospheric streets lined with traditional restaurants and shops. In the evening, riverside dining along the Kamogawa River is a highlight, especially during summer when restaurants set up terrace platforms over the water.

Should I book Kyoto hotels early for cherry blossom season?

Yes, absolutely. Cherry blossom season from late March to mid-April is the most popular time to visit Kyoto and hotels fill up very quickly, often months in advance. Prices also increase significantly during this period. It is recommended to book your accommodation on Traveloka at least two to three months before your intended travel dates to secure the best selection and rates.

The Japan Rail Pass is useful for travelling to Kyoto from other cities like Osaka and Tokyo via the Shinkansen, but within Kyoto itself it has limited use as most local buses and the subway are not covered. Conveniently located just 1 stop away from Kyoto station on the Karasuma Line and 15-20 mins walking distance to the center of the Kawaramachi shopping district. With a 24-hour supermarket just right beside the hotel, 7-11 opposite and nearby McDonald's and Yoshinoya. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, service was also efficient and quick. The concierge/reception staff was also very friendly and helpful. There's a bathing area at the basement with complimentary refreshments for hotel guests.
