The PERFECT location; only 10 minutes walk from the Kyoto station and right across from the temple. They also had the BEST breakfast we’ve had during our entire Japan trip (you can choose between traditional Japanese or continental American); we had both and it was delicious. The staff was so sweet and accommodating. We were able to Uber everywhere within 20 minutes. Highly recommend!!

We have stayed at a lot of hotels on every continent and our stay at Hokkaikan Ohanabo was one of the best ever! Our room was spotless and serviced unobtrusively and meticulously. The staff was kind to a fault—insisting on carrying our (heavy) luggage up and down the stairs, drying our umbrellas with towels when we returned, putting our shoes out each morning when shortly before we needed them, and checking with us about every possible need. The breakfasts were spectacular in appearances, flavor, variety and amount (too much to eat, too many choices). I read with some skepticism a few prior reviews saying that the best part of visiting Kyoto was staying at Hokkaikan Ohanabo, but as magical as Kyoto is, I now understand what they meant. The genuine kindness and warmth of the entire staff is unsurpassed.

Hokkaikan Ohanabo was an amazing stay if you are looking for a nice ryokan that has good traditional decor and that is fairly close to the main areas of Kyoto. My group arrived a little earlier than our check in time, but they kindly allowed us to store our luggage there so we could enjoy the area before returning to official check in. We were also looking for nice breakfast places and cafes to check out while we waited and they recommended us some places that turned out to be some of the highlights of our trip. Everyone was so kind here. I would definitely return here and would definitely recommend this ryokan to anybody wanting a nice place to stay.

An immaculately maintained vintage property with superbly hospitable staff, offering a warm, homemade atmosphere that feels instantly welcoming. The kaiseki meals were impeccable—beautifully prepared and a highlight of the stay.
