More about hotels in Melaka

Hotels in Melaka for Singaporean Travellers

Melaka, the historic gem of Malaysia, is one of the most beloved weekend getaway destinations for Singaporean travellers. Located approximately three and a half hours by car from Singapore via the North-South Expressway, this UNESCO World Heritage city offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and culinary delights that make it perfect for a short break from the Lion City. Booking your Melaka hotel on Traveloka gives you access to a wide range of properties across the city, from charming heritage boutique hotels in the old town to modern resorts along the coast, all with prices displayed in SGD for your convenience.

Melaka's appeal for Singaporean travellers lies in its unique blend of cultural heritage and modern comfort. The city's historic centre, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, tells the story of centuries of trade, colonisation, and cultural exchange involving the Malay, Portuguese, Dutch, and British. Walking through the streets of Melaka is like stepping through layers of history, with each neighbourhood revealing a different chapter. And thanks to the favourable SGD-to-MYR exchange rate, the entire experience comes at a fraction of what a similar heritage destination would cost elsewhere in the world.

Best Areas to Stay in Melaka

Melaka Old Town & Jonker Street

The old town area around Jonker Street is the most popular choice for Singaporean visitors, and for good reason. Staying here puts you within walking distance of virtually all of Melaka's top attractions, including Christ Church, the Stadthuys, A Famosa fortress, and the vibrant Jonker Street Night Market. Hotels in this area range from beautifully converted heritage shophouses starting at SGD 35 per night to mid-range boutique hotels at SGD 60 | SGD 120 per night. The heritage shophouse hotels are a particularly special experience, offering atmospheric rooms with original architectural details like Peranakan tiles, timber beams, and interior courtyards.

Melaka Raya & Hatten Area

The Melaka Raya and Hatten area is a more modern district located just south of the old town. This area is home to several large shopping malls including Hatten Square, Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, and Mahkota Parade, making it a good choice for Singaporean travellers who enjoy shopping alongside their sightseeing. Hotels here tend to be newer and offer more contemporary facilities, with prices ranging from SGD 30 | SGD 100 per night. The area is within easy walking distance of the old town, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Melaka Coastal Area & Klebang

For Singaporean families and travellers seeking a more relaxed stay, the coastal areas of Melaka, particularly around Klebang, offer seaside resorts and larger hotel properties with swimming pools and family-friendly facilities. Hotels along the coast start from around SGD 40 per night and offer a quieter alternative to the bustling city centre. The famous Klebang coconut shake stalls are a must-visit in this area, serving what many consider to be the best coconut shake in all of Malaysia.

Top Attractions in Melaka

Jonker Street & the Night Market

Jonker Street, also known as Jalan Hang Jebat, is the cultural heart of Melaka and an absolute must-visit for Singaporean travellers. During the day, the street is lined with antique shops, art galleries, Peranakan restaurants, and traditional craft stores. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, the street transforms into the famous Jonker Street Night Market, where hundreds of stalls sell everything from local snacks and drinks to handmade crafts and souvenirs. The atmosphere is electric, with live music, cultural performances, and the aroma of freshly prepared satay celup, cendol, and chicken rice balls filling the air.

A Famosa & St Paul's Hill

A Famosa is one of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Southeast Asia, originally built by the Portuguese in 1511. The iconic gateway, known as Porta de Santiago, is one of Melaka's most photographed landmarks. Climbing up St Paul's Hill behind A Famosa leads you to the ruins of St Paul's Church, which offers panoramic views of the Melaka Strait and the city below. The climb is short but can be warm during the midday heat, so Singaporean visitors are advised to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Melaka River Cruise

The Melaka River cruise is one of the city's most popular activities and a wonderful way to see the old town from a different perspective. The 45-minute boat ride takes you along the tree-lined river, past colourful murals, historic buildings, and charming bridges. The cruise is especially beautiful in the evening when the riverside buildings are illuminated. Tickets cost approximately SGD 8 | SGD 12 for adults, making it an affordable and memorable experience for Singaporean families and couples alike.

Melaka's Famous Food Scene

Melaka is a food paradise that rivals even Singapore for its diversity and flavour. The city is famous for its Peranakan cuisine, with dishes like ayam pongteh, laksa, otak-otak, and pie tee being local specialities. Chicken rice balls, a unique Melakan twist on the classic Hainanese chicken rice, are a must-try for every Singaporean visitor. Popular restaurants serving this dish are clustered around Jonker Street. Satay celup, a Melaka original where diners dip skewered ingredients into a communal pot of bubbling peanut sauce, is another iconic experience. The most famous satay celup restaurants are Capitol Satay and Ban Lee Siang, both of which often have long queues during peak dinner hours.

For dessert, Melaka's cendol is legendary, made with fragrant gula Melaka (palm sugar), coconut milk, and pandan-flavoured green jelly. A bowl typically costs just SGD 1 | SGD 2. The Klebang coconut shake, made from fresh coconut water, ice cream, and coconut flesh, is another beloved treat. Portuguese-influenced dishes like devil curry and Eurasian-style seafood can be found in the Portuguese Settlement area along the coast, offering yet another layer to Melaka's extraordinary culinary diversity.

Getting from Singapore to Melaka

The most popular way for Singaporeans to reach Melaka is by car, with the drive taking approximately three to three and a half hours via the Second Link crossing and the North-South Expressway. This makes Melaka ideal for a weekend road trip, especially for families who want the flexibility of having their own vehicle. Coach services also operate between Singapore and Melaka, with major operators running multiple daily departures from locations like Golden Mile Complex and Beach Road. Coach fares typically range from SGD 15 | SGD 35 one way.
