This hotel is amazing. It's undergone a dramatic transformation. I first booked this hotel in 1992, when it was called Hotel 81 Classic. In 2026 (34 years later), I booked it again, with a remarkable transformation. The staff are wonderful and very helpful. The hotel is surrounded by a food court, fresh fruit stalls, and fresh juices. It's close to public transportation, including the MRT and bus.

If you are claustrophobic, then it won't be suitable for you. Pillow is too soft and when we called for the night shift receptionist for extra pillow, he didn't bother to call us back. Our room was upgraded by the customer service oriented personnel at the counter. He's friendly and very welcoming 👍Room is very clean and comfortable.

Overview of Hotel Classic by Venue

Hotel Classic by Venue is the current name of the property that previously traded as Hotel 81 Classic. Traveloka's listing records the change of name directly, and the hotel now sits within the Venue Hotel collection operated by Worldwide Hotels, whose brand portfolio also includes Hotel 81, Hotel Boss and V Hotel. According to Traveloka's property data, the building dates from 2000 and was last renovated in 2009, so guests who knew the address under its old Hotel 81 branding are returning to the same building with a refreshed identity.

The hotel stands at 12 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427353, in the Joo Chiat area of East Coast. The official Venue Hotel website describes it as "a cosy boutique hotel in Singapore curated for curious travellers who seek interesting experiences", set in "the popular Joo Chiat neighbourhood — a locality known for its rich culture, history, and architecture." That framing suits the property well: this is a compact, practical base rather than a full-service resort, and its appeal comes largely from the streets around it.

Traveloka lists Hotel Classic by Venue as a 3-star hotel with 81 rooms spread over four floors. It is a smoke-free property, guests must be at least 18 years old to check in, and Traveloka has tagged it with two highlights: "Great value in its class" and "High-quality service", the latter noting minimal check-in issues. For travellers who want a straightforward room in one of Singapore's most characterful eastern neighbourhoods, it is a sensible shortlist candidate.

Room Types at Hotel Classic by Venue

The official Venue Hotel website lists six room categories at Hotel Classic by Venue. Sizes are modest, as is typical for a compact city hotel, so it is worth matching the room to the number of guests and the amount of luggage you are bringing. The categories below run from the smallest upwards, using the sizes and occupancy limits stated on the official site.

Standard Queen

The Standard Queen is one of the entry-level categories, at 14 square metres with a queen bed and space for up to two guests. It suits solo travellers or couples who plan to spend most of the day out exploring Joo Chiat, Katong and the wider city, and who mainly need a clean, air-conditioned room to return to.

Standard Twin

The Standard Twin shares the same 14-square-metre footprint and two-guest limit as the Standard Queen, but with twin beds. It is the natural choice for friends or colleagues travelling together who prefer separate beds.

Superior Queen

The Superior Queen is also listed at 14 square metres for up to two guests. The official site positions it a step above the Standard rooms; check the room description on the booking page to see what distinguishes it at the time you book.

Premier Queen

The Premier Queen offers a little more space at 16 square metres, again for a maximum of two guests. Couples on a longer stay, or anyone who wants slightly more room to unpack, may find the extra floor area worthwhile.

Triple

The Triple room measures 16 square metres and accommodates up to three guests, making it a practical option for small groups or a family with an older child who needs their own sleeping space.

Family

The Family room is the largest category listed, at 18 square metres for up to four guests. According to the official site, children under six stay at no extra charge when no additional bedding is required, which can make this room a sensible pick for families.

Traveloka's listing shows in-room facilities including air conditioning, a TV, a shower, a hairdryer and an in-room safe, and the electrical supply in rooms is 240 volts. Room-level amenities can vary by category, so check the individual room details on the listing before you confirm.

Facilities and Amenities

Hotel Classic by Venue keeps its facilities focused on the essentials. Based on Traveloka's listing data, guests can expect:

  • Connectivity: free WiFi, with WiFi also available in public areas.
  • Comfort: air conditioning throughout.
  • Access: an elevator serving the four floors.
  • Security: a safety deposit box, in-room safes and 24-hour security.
  • Front desk: a 24-hour receptionist, multilingual staff and luggage storage.

The luggage storage is particularly useful in Singapore, where many flights arrive early in the morning or depart late at night. You can leave your bags with the front desk and head out to explore before check-in or after check-out.

There are a few things the property does not offer, and it helps to know them in advance. Traveloka's data lists no on-site restaurant or bar, room service is listed as not available, on-site parking is listed as not available, and the property does not provide an airport transfer. Smoking is prohibited throughout, and the official site states that pets are not allowed. If you are driving or need a transfer, make alternative arrangements before you arrive.

Location and Getting There

The hotel's address is 12 Joo Chiat Road, in the Joo Chiat area of East Coast, Singapore. Joo Chiat is known for its rows of colourful shophouses, independent cafés and local eateries, and it blends into the neighbouring Katong district towards the coast. The official Venue Hotel website highlights several nearby points of interest for guests:

  • Koon Seng Road Colourful Houses — the row of brightly painted houses the street is known for.
  • Katong Antique House — one of the heritage stops the hotel recommends in the area.
  • Katong - Joo Chiat Mural Walk — a walking route past murals in the neighbourhood.
  • Paya Lebar Quarter Mall — a shopping mall for everyday errands, dining and shopping.

Singapore's main international gateway is Changi Airport, on the eastern side of the island, the same side of the city as Joo Chiat. If you are still planning your arrival, you can search for flights to Singapore on Traveloka and then arrange a taxi, ride-hailing car or public transport to the hotel. As the hotel does not run its own airport transfer, it is best to book onward transport separately. For the most accurate walking times to the nearest MRT station and bus stops, use a map app with the full address and postal code 427353.

Joo Chiat is also a convenient base for East Coast Park, which the Venue Hotel collection page includes among the attractions of the area, alongside the Peranakan houses that give the district much of its character.

Dining near Hotel Classic by Venue

Hotel Classic by Venue has no on-site restaurant or bar according to Traveloka's data, and room service is not available. Breakfast is not something to count on at the property itself, so check whether your selected rate includes any meal option, and otherwise plan to eat out. In Joo Chiat that is no hardship: the neighbourhood is one of Singapore's best-known areas for food, from old-school coffee shops to modern cafés.

The official Venue Hotel website suggests several nearby spots for guests to try:

  • Olsen Bakehouse — a neighbourhood bakery.
  • Common Man Coffee Roaster — a coffee stop recommended by the hotel.
  • Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Popiah — a local name for popiah, the fresh spring roll.
  • Hat of Cain and La Tienda — two further neighbourhood picks from the hotel's own guide.

Joo Chiat Road and the streets around it have plenty of casual eateries, so you can usually find a meal within a short walk. If you want to combine food with sightseeing, browse tours and things to do in Singapore, including food and heritage experiences in the eastern districts.

Why Stay at Hotel Classic by Venue

The strongest reason to choose Hotel Classic by Venue is the neighbourhood. Joo Chiat feels very different from the high-rise hotel districts around Marina Bay and Orchard Road: low-rise shophouses, a strong food culture and a slower pace give a more local view of Singapore. Staying here puts the Koon Seng Road houses, the mural walk and some of the east's popular cafés within easy reach.

The hotel itself is practical rather than lavish. With 81 rooms over four floors, a 24-hour front desk, multilingual staff, an elevator, free WiFi and in-room safes, it covers what most short-stay guests need. Six room categories, from 14-square-metre Standard rooms up to the 18-square-metre Family room, give you options whether you are travelling solo, as a couple or with children. Traveloka's "Great value in its class" and "High-quality service" highlights also suggest the property delivers reliably on the basics.

It also helps to know who the hotel is not ideal for. Guests who want an on-site restaurant, room service or parking will find more choice at larger properties, and drivers in particular should look elsewhere because on-site parking is not offered. If those matter to you, compare other hotels in Singapore on Traveloka before booking.

For travellers who already know the area from its Hotel 81 Classic days, the property offers continuity: the same Joo Chiat Road address, now under the Venue Hotel name.

Tips for Booking Hotel Classic by Venue on Traveloka

  1. Bring physical ID. In line with Singapore's hotel licensing and national registration regulations, every guest must present a valid original passport or photo ID card at check-in. Digital Singpass IDs and membership cards are not accepted for registration.
  2. Have a physical credit card ready. The listing states that guests need to bring a credit card in hard copy at check-in.
  3. Plan around check-in and check-out times. Standard check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00. The official site notes that early check-in and late check-out may be arranged subject to availability and an additional charge, so ask the hotel directly if you need extra time.
  4. Check the minimum age. The main guest checking in must be at least 18, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
  5. Pick the right room size. Standard and Superior rooms are 14 square metres, so travellers with large suitcases or longer stays may prefer the Premier Queen, Triple or Family room.
  6. Arrange transport early. With no on-site parking or airport transfer, decide in advance how you will get from the airport and around the city.
  7. Review the rate details. Read the room and rate details on Traveloka before you pay, including what is included, the cancellation policy and any meal option.

Once your room is sorted, you can plan the rest of the trip from the Traveloka homepage.

The hotel was very clean and well maintained. It was also updated with nice glass showers, very nice rain drop shower, pot lights and very nice tiles through out. I would have given the property five stars if not for the issue where the housekeeper woke us up at 3:00am due to the noice from cleaning one of the rooms one morning and the fact there was no breakfast in the morning.

Carole and Alf are the best @ the reception desk They are friendly and very helpful with whatever questions you have regarding transportation, MRT, buses, taxi or Grab and the places to eat. They'll always tell you the best option(s). Any concerns just ask them and they'll resolve it immediately. Firdaus kept our room sparklingly clean daily with fresh towels daily. We just love these staff. It's our 1st time in Singapore and they made our visit much less stressful.

The receptionists were friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable but so very tiny: the bed was pushed to the wall; the fridge door can't open fully; practically no storage for clothes- only a few hangers! & the windows had wooden louvers, so no outside view! The room was facing the road, so there is noise from the traffic. It's not ideal for longer stsys.
