We stayed 10 nights at Mahekal. It’s definitely different from our usual pick - the Royal Hidaway- but we wanted a change. It’s a 4 or 3.5 star resort that needs a bit of a TLC, but it didn’t bother us. The noise didn’t bother us either, very reasonable. Mosquitos are relentless, very grateful for the Off provided in each room. Staff are very friendly and polite. The welcome at the reception needs improvement. Important to give folks the room that was advertised and paid for. After travelling for 16 hrs, walking to the Oasis part in the heat, then walking back to complain about the room is not great. Then a young person at the reception starts arguing how the resort is not under the obligation to give us the room from the picture only to be interrupted by a more experienced colleague who immediately helped us. And we received the welcome drink :) We ate outside of the resort and I fully recommend it. The resort location is excellent and the 38th street has great restaurants. We only had lunches at Fuego and the food was not great. Starbucks on the property is amazing and Cesar rocks - so friendly! What we liked the most is the Oasis part of the resort and the small pool there, which was mostly empty. We enjoyed the jungle and that pool so much! If everything else was not good we’d still be happy with this vacation due to our room balcony and that pool. I recommend Mahekal, but be aware, you will not find the ACed lobby etc. If you like bohemian, it’s a place to be!

We booked to Expedia and the hotel did not recognize our booking even though we had confirmation on our phones. So we’re forced to stay elsewhere. After charging me $1600 American dollars.

This was our 3rd visit to Mahekal and this was once my favorite getaway but will not likely return again. Had a couple of unpleasant experiences with waitstaff at Los Olas restaurant. Waiter was unfriendly, unkind and I was treated very disrespectfully, unattended to during our meal. The pool towels ran out almost daily, and the pool/hot tub hours close at 7pm-much too soon in the day to close.

Great layout of resort. Beach during time we were there was not swimmable. Choose beach bungalows overlooking the ocean top bungalow if possible. Even if you get meal deals be prepared to pay tips at every meal. Very relaxing and staff is helpful. Get to meals early when it opens because when busy or towards end it feels rushed. Area felt very safe. Tours recommended by onsite tour guide were great!

Zimmer das wir bekommen haben war einmalig. Sehr gross und eine traumhafte Aussicht. Die Anlage ist sehr gross. Für die Grösse der Anlage hat es viel zu wenig Liegemöglichkeiten an den Pools. Das Personal war nur teils sehr freundlich. Im Restaurant finde ich es sehr bedenklich, dass auf die hohen Preise des Frühstücks Trinkgeld berechnet wird. Dies entspricht keiner Relation für dieses Land.

I truly appreciated beautiful traditional unique houses where we lived, the nature, and the way the whole resort was maintained. The beautiful beach, comfortable sun-bathing beds, and white towels were great to have! Breakfast menu was great, however, I'd welcome more variety of juices beyond "jugo verde" and "jugo de naranja", like a variety of fruit and vegetable juices with no sugar, however, the selection of food was great. Staff was kind and hospitable, polite and helpful. Our room was always clean.

The location was amazing. There are so many seating options around the resort and they are very comfortable. I would have liked the hot tub hotter. Several pool options so it wasn’t ever too busy. The staff are so friendly and very hard working. Would definitely recommend.

The first thing you will notice is the awful smell, the beach has so much seaweed it smells of fish. The beach is small and filled with seaweed, so not pleasant at all. It's a busy beach, with lots of local people. Thankfully there is a decent amount of seating on the resort side of the rope. The food was good, I appreciate the decent selection of veg/vegan options, but options are limited, there is only one buffer and one restaurant. You will see the same food selection day in and day out. We went with the all inclusive option, which I would not recommend, since there are so many great restaurant options close by. The daily activities were very basic and limited. This is not a true all inclusive in my mind. There is some nickel and diming for little upgrades here and there, like better drink and food options. Though the facilities are nice, and the staff are mostly very friendly, I would not go back to this resort.

Overall, the staff was very helpful. However, the desk staff did not solve an issue we had. While respectful we encountered inadequate solution and was warned down by the time that it took and the aggravation it caused us while a vacation should be down time. The resort is wonderful, the beach itself and waters are naturally overpowered by the natural phenomun of the seagrass.

The staff are amazing always have a smile on their faces & they seem genuinely happy to help in anyway they can if at all necessary. The rooms are spotlessly clean . The location is perfect for peace & if you choose to walk out of the resort gate youre then right into the heart of all the lovely restaurants, loval clothes stores coffe shops etc with a vibrant atmosphere. This is my 3 rd time staying at the mahakel & I will always return . Great private beach areas four pools & beautiful gardens to walk around totally peaceful ohh and the spa is amazing & im a sucker for a deep tissue massage and boy can they deliver . I give this peaceful beautiful resort a 5 star . I have done both ocean views & garden views here and their both excellent choices

Prior to our trip the communication was appreciated. Daniel, our concierge, was so easy to work with. I began receiving texts from the moment we landed. That same communication continued all week long. He made sure to check in throughout the day. Even on his day off he asked if he could do anything for us. Enrique was our setver when dining. He knew our namesand greeted us always with a smile. On our last day he arranged beautiful table for us. He treated us as family. Make sure to meet him and ask for him by name. The room and property were amazing. Staff takes care of your every need. This is the place to stay in Playa del Car
