The Charles Hotel

Very friendly and helpful staff. Room was freezing and no window in room!!! Very strange little room. There was a window which couldn’t open into the inside corridor!

With a few improvements, this hotel could be a reasonable place to stay, but several issues need attention. The carpet throughout the building requires a thorough clean, and the hallway walls could benefit from a quick repaint as they were very dirty. Reception and the corridors were unheated, making the atmosphere feel unwelcoming and extremely cold. When we arrived in December, our room window had been left open so the room was freezing. It would’ve felt so much better walking into a warm room. There was nowhere to hang coats, no hooks and not even hangers on the clothes rail. The electric heater had a loose metal panel, which felt unsafe. The TV was very small and unwatchable due to the poor signal. The rear access spiral staircase would difficult to navigate and unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility. The area outside the reception door looked untidy, with items like an old paint can and a piece of AstroTurf left lying around. Breakfast was essentially non existent, and no information was provided about it. Would we stay again, definitely not unless the above was attended to.

I was absolutely eaten alive by bed bugs, had them jumping all over me in the night.

The room look like clean, but I can feel some insects on my body when I was sleep and I can see very small insects on my belongings. Window was very strange, It will hit the body when opened. It will hurt when careless. No staff stay in reception, customer needs to ring someone to open the entrance door. Customer need to climb stair from car park to lobby, don't carry anything, it very inconvenient.

I registered my car on their ipad at reception, but have still received a fine for staying in the car park. Tried to contact the hotel, but have been completely ignored....

Great location, close to shops, restaurants etc. Room was good size, clean and well maintained.

No mobility & disabled access. No elevator. Very noisy area. Tiny rooms. Very old building, unfitted for hotel lodger. Very dirty old narrow garage.

Really large triple/family room, could have got another bed or two in and still had space to wonder about. Comfy bed, good bathroom, breakfast didn't start til 7.30 so had to miss that as I had an early start, however, they also have a restaurant next door, had a very tasty curry. Will be back, not very much onsite parking but plenty of free street parking out front that is free 7pm til 8 am. Will be back if i'm in the area, hopefully not such an early start so I can try the breakfast, hope it's as good as the curry.

SHOWER TRAY WAS SPLIT IN THREE WITH CRACKS RIGHT ACROSS MOULD IN THE SHOWER THE SHOWER CONTROLS WE BARELY FUNCTIONAL STIFF A BUTTON MISSING .BATHROOM LIGHT WAS TOO SESITIVE TO GOING OFF EITHER WHEN ON THE TOILET OR SHOWER.MY PLANS CHANGED I REPORTED BEFORE 10AM I DID NOT NEED SECOND NIGHT NO REFUND AND HOTELS SEEM TO HAVE SAME CLAUSE.FROM CARPARK TIGHT 30 FT SPIRAL STAIRCASE TO GET TO RECEPTION NO GOOD IF I HAD HEAVY BAGS OR ANY DISABILITY. AND ON MY OWN.

I thought my booking included breakfast but it didn’t

Looks really good from the outside and on the pictures, but it’s an absolutely hell hole

The check-in and out time was too long. There’s no one fixed in the reception so you just have to keep waiting and waiting. You may have a tired day already and come up with this kind of no mans land is absolute terrible.

Parking validation tablet didn't work, worn out mattress, cracked shower tray didn't drain very well, dirty carpets.

Everything was perfectly ok for a reasonable and good value overnight stay - the room was clean and had everything needed but the mattress was very uncomfortable indeed, needs replacing. Sadly I had a poor night's sleep due to mattress being long past its use by date. A shame because everything else was ok.

Very nice polite staff and friendly service.

The photo that was advertised was ABSOLUTLEY NOT THE SAME ROOM THAT WE HAD - IT WAS A SHOE BOX AND I WOULD RECOMMEND ANYTONE STAYING THERE PLEASE, PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER THIS PLACE WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT ME TO SaY !

Disappointed that this hotel is listed by hotels.com Having stayed at many, we were surpised to find this as poor as it was. No english-speaking night staff made communication difficult. We had two rooms, both of which smelled of the indian restaurant below. This isn't mentioned.

Was supposed to be a soundproof room but you could hear everything outside of the room including the constant noise of traffic and people talking in the street and outside the room and the shower had only one temperature which was extremely hot and the temperature would not adjust. Other than that the room was clean and the bed was comfortable

The room was a decent size but there was a strange smell in the room, the bathroom was very small and hard to manoeuvre around. There was a lot of mould around the seals in the shower. The bed had a large dent in the mattress and clearly needs replaced. The walls of the room need cleaned, tv remote was filthy. I only stayed because it was a single over night stay otherwise I would have found alternative accommodation.
