Beautiful view from our room. Spa and spa treatments were lovely. Large lounge restaurant area with view of lake, ideal for just chilling. Location is superb.

The hotel was in a perfect location only downside our room was so hot 🔥 when we said about it they said yes that room tends to be hot next time tell them you don't want that room! Also there was a large hair in amongst the toast we didn't complain at breakfast but on checking out said and was told if we had said you could have had something free off breakfast menu! Wouldn't stop us going back though .

We arrived for a four night stay and no one offered to help with luggage or really anything. It’s was 32 Celsius and the front desk did not even have fans. They left the curtains open and no air conditioning so the room was an oven and the carpet was filthy. The window would only open one inch. No one helped us with our luggage and there are all sorts of staircases. Front desk was rude and unhelpful and we would have baked to death. We found another hotel and left, having prepaid $1200. Expedia could not get them to charge for one night only since we never used the hotel room but they refused to do anything. Expedia kindly gave me a coupon to cover some of my trouble but it was out of their hands. The hotel is a three star best case… The B&B we moved to had balconies and temperature even on hottest days of the summer were pleasant.

The hotel was very tired and run down. There wasn’t a phone in the room, so we couldn’t call for ice or a new bath robe (as the one we had was dirty from a previous guest). The room was too hot and there wasn’t any air con. There was mould in the bathroom. The towels were supposed to be white but more greyish. The bar area was very pleasant, so was the swimming pool. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel really needs some TLC with the fixtures and fittings, as well as towels / dressing gowns. I wouldn’t class it as 4 star.

Informed hotel it was my 60th they completely ignored this a happy birthday would have been nice - concierge was embarrassed as we checked out!! - bath panel falling to bits and bathroom dated hotel sign falling to bits - breakfast made me unwell feel disappointed

Not so great bits - Considering the high price of the room, the room we were allocated was very small in comparison to the other rooms The English breakfast was sadly tasteless and we felt we were an inconvenience to the breakfast staff when waiting to be seated and ordering toast etc Parking is not on site (tight to enter and keypad is very low) charged at £25 per stay and only valid for 1 hour after checkout Good bits - great central location, room and bathroom was well equipped, maintained and very clean, the lounge area has lovely views across the lake

The room was not very clean. Breakfast only has English options and no variety of fruits at all. Nor do they timely re stock fruits. Rooms were dirty. We found used tissue on first day on kids bunk bed. The staff is cold and not very warm in general. The look on their face is figure out things on your own.

Hotel is in a beautiful location and grounds were lovely to sit in and relax. Excellent for getting to the key parts of Bowness especially marina for boat trips. Most staff were good - housekeeping, bar staff and some of the restaurant in particular, but Breakfast could have been served with a little more urgency and so disappointing that our breakfast on day 2 didn’t arrive at all. Hotel has the potential to be beautiful but needs a thorough refurb and tidy up. Overpriced parking at £25 a day.

The Macdonald old England is a very tired hotel in desperate need of refurbishment, it certainly lives up to its name of “old”. The staff look tired and fed up. I requested a cot for my room in advance and was told via email that a cot would be provided but no cot in the room when we arrived. When I asked at reception the staff member almost rolled his eyes and reluctantly said he would try and find a cot, the attitude was unhelpful. The elevator is small and smells awful, like literal garbage when you step inside. The breakfast was average at best, a small portion of cooked breakfast and a small selection of underwhelming pastries and cereal. The only positive was that the rooms appeared well cleaned as was the rest of the hotel. Overall, disappointing.

Top quality hotel in a brilliant location, absolutely loved it here. We didn’t find a better bar to have a drink in or a better restaurant to eat in, all perfect… with a wonderful view over the lake too! The leisure facilities really helped too, the pool was a proper pool you could actually swim in! My only (very slight) observation might be that it did look a bit tired in places, with a bit of paint peeling off here and there.
