Picture this: ancient temples, street food that'll blow your mind, and beaches that look like they've been photoshopped. That's Colombo for you. Sri Lanka's capital is where colonial history meets modern chaos in the best possible way, and it's your launchpad for exploring tea plantations, wildlife safaris, and some of the most stunning coastline you'll ever see. The best part? You can fly direct from Sydney, so there’s no mucking around with connections.
If you’re looking for alternate (or budget) options, you may want to consider a connecting flight. Airlines like AirAsia and now Jetstar offer cheap flights to Sri Lanka.
When flying direct, it takes 13 hours and 15 minutes to fly from Sydney to Colombo. Flights usually leave Australia in the afternoon and arrive in Colombo in the evening, so you'll land with enough time to grab dinner and check into your hotel without the rush.
You're usually looking at anywhere between AU$405 and AU$840 for a one-way ticket, with current cheapest fares kicking off from around AU$507. Booking two to three months out is your best bet for snagging a decent price, especially if you're planning to travel during the busy season.
Pro tip: EOFY and Black Friday sales are when airlines go all out with their best international deals, so mark those dates in your calendar.
January through May is typically your sweet spot for cheap fares, and it lines up perfectly with Sri Lanka's dry season on the west and south coasts. December is when prices go through the roof because everyone's jetting off for summer holidays, plus Colombo gets pretty festive with Christmas and New Year celebrations. Steer clear of April if you're watching your wallet, as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year makes everything pricier.
Bandaranaike International Airport sits about 35 kilometres north of the city. It's the biggest airport in Sri Lanka and your first stop on the island.
You’ve got a few ways to get into town:
You'll need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to get into Sri Lanka. Sort this out before you fly because getting one at Colombo Airport can be a hassle with limited facilities. The online application is pretty straightforward, and you'll usually get approved within 24 hours.
Colombo runs 4.5 hours behind Sydney, but that stretches to 5.5 hours when we're on daylight savings time. Sri Lanka doesn't bother with daylight saving, so the gap changes between October and April.
