About Hobart flights

Everything you need to know about flying to Hobart

The gateway to Tasmania’s rugged wilderness that’s unlike anything else in Australia, Hobart is often the first stop on many Tassie itineraries. Its historic centre, coastal charm and proximity to many of the state’s attractions make it a no-brainer for tourists to spend a few days. But first you’ll need to get there. And here’s how to do so easily and affordably.

How long is the flight to Hobart?

When flying direct, here’s the approximate length of the flight to Hobart from other major cities. Of course, depending on the weather and whether you end up on a connecting flight, these times may be longer.

Where is Hobart Airport?

Across the River Derwent, Hobart International Airport is about 17 km by road from the city in Cambridge. It’s just minutes from the A3, Tasman Highway, which connects major cities and makes getting to other destinations simple.

How to get to and from the airport in Hobart

  • Taxi and rideshare: Available right from the airport, taxis can get you to the city for about AU$40-AU$50 in about 20 minutes. If you prefer rideshare, you can order an Uber from the designated pick-up point at the airport.
  • Rental car: If you’ve hired a car to explore Hobart or other destinations in Tasmania, it’s easy to get back to and from the airport from the city. It’s just a 20-minute drive from the CBD and some hire car booths are located right at the airport.
  • Skybus: Meeting scheduled flights at the airport, the Skybus shuttles passengers into the city in about 30 minutes. Tickets are AU$22 each way or $38 return whether you buy them in advance or at the airport. (This is the only public transportation option)

How early to arrive at Hobart Airport

Flying to Hobart from within Australia

If you’re booking a flight to Hobart from another Australian city, you’ll want to get to the airport at least an hour before departure. While you can usually check in for your Hobart flight online in advance, sometimes queues to drop checked baggage off can be slow so it’s best to leave extra time if you need it.

Flying to Hobart from outside of Australia

If you’re flying to Hobart on a direct international flight, you’ll want to arrive about three hours early to ensure you have enough time to check in, check bags, go through customs and pass security.

Cheapest time to fly to Hobart

For a combination of affordable flights and decent weather, consider flying during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), when the weather remains pleasant and flights are more budget-friendly.
