About Osaka flights

Calling all foodies for a visit to Osaka, ‘the kitchen of Japan’. Japan’s third-largest city has a gourmet scene that is a dizzying mix of umami, with sizzling octopus takoyaki, okonomiyaki pancakes and kushikatsu skewers all being Osaka originals. Once the stomach is full, there’s plenty of time for neon nightlife in Dōtonbori, history at the blossom-lined Osaka Castle, and a day out at Universal Studios Japan.

How long is the flight to Osaka

Which airlines fly direct to Osaka

  • Jetstar: The low‑cost Aussie carrier is the only one that flies directly into Osaka. Expect optional extras like entertainment, a big network, and frequent flyer integration from its parent company - Qantas.

Where you can fly direct to Osaka from

  • Sydney
  • Cairns
  • Brisbane

Where is the airport in Osaka?

You can start island hopping as soon as you land at Kansai International Airport (KIX). That is because Osaka’s airport is literally on an artificial one. 50 km southwest of central Osaka, there are easy connections via the Haruka Express, which takes 50 minutes to reach Shin‑Osaka station. You can also take taxis with meters, rideshares, and airport limos, or pick up a rental car.

Continuing to another part of the archipelago? From Shin‑Osaka station, it’s simple to connect onward to Kyoto or Nara via the Shinkansen.

When is the cheapest time to fly to Osaka

August is one of the cheapest months to fly to Osaka, thanks to the summer typhoon season during the hot months. On the other end of the scale, Cherry blossom peak (late March to April), Golden Week (early May) and December are best avoided for the budget conscious.

Want the best of both worlds? The shoulder seasons of September to November and late spring (May) are a tasty combo of lower fares and mild weather.

Visa and passport requirements when flying to Osaka

Luckily, Australians don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days, but you will need a passport. Just make sure your passport is valid for the whole of your visit.

How early to arrive at the airport

Arrive at least 3 hours before your departure to Osaka, to allow time for check‑in, security and passport control.
