Scootβs journey started in May 2011, when Singapore Airlines announced its intention to establish a low-cost subsidiary airline for medium and long-haul routes. Two months later, in July 2011, Singapore Airlines appointed Campbell Wilson as the founding CEO of the new airline. This new airline was named Scoot and was established in November 2011. In 2012, it was announced that Scootβs IATA code would change from OQ to TZ. Still in 2012, precisely on 4 June, Scoot began its first flight from Singapore to Sydney Airport in Australia. Only eight days later, the airline started flying to Gold Coast, its second Australian destination. On 24 October 2012, it was announced that Scootβs parent company, Singapore Airlines, would be transferring 20 of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners they had ordered to Scoot, replacing their current fleet of Boeing 777-200 aircrafts and to help with its ongoing expansion and future growth. In 2013, Scoot decided to increase its fleet by adding a fifth Boeing 777-200 to its fleet by the end of May or early June so they can add two or three more routes to its network. On March 2013, it was announced that Scoot would launch a thrice-weekly flights service with SingaporeβTaipeiβSeoul flight route. However, Scoot keeps expanding its network and business by ordering another 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. In November 2013, Scoot began its five weekly flights service from Singapore to Hong Kong, which would become a daily service by December 2013. Since then, Scootβs flight network kept expanding. In September 2014, it was announced that Scoot would introduce its Boeing 787-9 aircrafts for flights services to Sydney, Perth, and Hong Kong starting from 29 March 2015, to Bangkok and Gold Coast in late April 2015, followed by Tianjin Binhai International Airport, Shenyang, and Qingdao in May 2015. In December of the same year, Scoot also announced its new flight route from Singapore to Melbourne using Boeing 787 aircraft. Still in December 2014, together with Nok Air, Scoot announced its new long-haul flight service to Thailand, using the name NokScoot. Nok Air owns 51% of NokScoot, while Scoot holds the remaining 49%. In early February 2015, Scootβs Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were delivered. The aircraft started its flight service from Singapore to Perth flight route on 5 February 2015, followed by the SingaporeβHong Kong route on the next day. In October 2015, Singapore Airlines announced that Scoot would take over its existing SingaporeβJeddah route via Dubai and launch direct services between Singapore and Jeddah. Scoot kept expanding its flight network by announcing its intention to start flights to three Indian cities, which are Amritsar, Chennai, and Jaipur.Scoot reached one of its big milestones in May 2016, when the airline joined the worldβs largest low-cost carrier alliance, Value Alliance. Within the same month, Singapore Airlines also established Budget Aviation Holdings, a holding company to own and manage its budget airlines, Scoot and Tigerair, following the delisting of Tigerair from the Singapore stock exchange. In November 2016, Singapore Airlines announced a merger between Tigerair and Scoot. This decision was taken as parts of the airlineβs long-term growth strategy to provide better traveling experience for its passengers. Although the announcement was made in November, the plan to merge Tigerair and Scoot has been developed since May 2016, when Tigerair and Scoot started to integrate their booking system, schedule, flight connections, aircrafts, check-in counters, and call center. The merger was eventually finalized on 25 July 2017, with Tigerair and Scoot operating under the Scoot brand. Due to this merger, Scootβs IATA code changed from TZ to TR, which was Tigerairβs IATA code. This newly merged airline officially owns 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 23 Airbus 230. Tigerairβs A320 aircrafts will be repainted with the yellow and white livery, which is expected to be completed by mid-2018. Scoot will also launch five new destinations by June 2018, which include Honolulu, Harbin, and Kuantan. With no sign of stopping, Scoot currently operates its flight service to 259 destinations across 16 countries around the world.
