Istanbul

A trip to Istanbul's most famous avenue, İstiklal Caddesi, will not be complete without a visit to this historic market. Although it only has around 20 stores, it offers an impressive selection of delectable seafood, as well as another 10 or so vendors serving accompanying dishes. For an authentic culinary experience, check the stands which offer midye tava or mussels fried in sizzling oil; and kokoreç or seasoned, skewered, and charcoal-grilled mutton or lamb offals. While you're there, mingle with the locals and enjoy the many selections of vegetables, fruits, pickles, caviar, fish, fresh-baked bread, and sandwiches. Make sure you pick up some jams, lokum or Turkish delight (sweets made from starch, sugar, and rose water), and lakerda or salted bonito as souvenirs. Halfway through the market, runs the Nevizade, a lively lane with a string of meyhanes—traditional taverns. For another option of good quality food for a reasonable price, you can also wander to Balik Pazari, another fish market next to Galatasaray.
