The History of Tet Festival

Tet Festival is a festival to celebrate the Vietnamese New Year; the name of Tết Nguyên Đán itself means "Festival of the First Morning of the First Day." Technically, the Tet Festival comes from an origin similar to the Chinese New Year.

However, some things make this celebration different. For example, in Vietnam, the locals celebrate the festival by eating traditional foods that have symbolic value.

Time & Location of Tet Festival's Celebration

After some years have passed, it can be said that Tet Festival is usually celebrated between late January and early or mid-February. The date estimation is between 21 January and 20 February, and the dates typically change based on the Lunar calendar.

Usually, Tet Festival will be held for at least one week, which can be longer. In 2023, the Tet Festival will be held around Sunday, 22 January, the same as the Chinese New Year's celebration. During Tet's celebration, most businesses & places remain closed.

What to Expect for Tet Festival?

Before Tet Festival gets closer, families celebrating the Tet Festival will likely polish their homes and put some flowers in every corner of the house. Besides, they are also going to temples to pray about two weeks before Tet Festival.

On the first day of the Tet Festival, locals will visit each other, and people tend to like to wear traditional new clothes and shoes. Vietnamese enjoy traditional food during Tet Festival, and kids usually get envelopes (ang pao).

Traveling to Vietnam during Tet Festival
