Aegean Airlines was acquired in 1994 by the Vasilakis Group after being established as Aegean Aviation in 1987. Five years later or in May 1999 the airline started commercial flights from Athens to Heraklion, Thessaloniki and Crete using two Avro RJ100s.
After acquiring Air Greece in December 1999, Aegean Airlines partnered with Lufthansa and entered into a cooperation agreement with TAP Air Portugal in March 2006.
Like several other airlines, Aegean Airlines joined Star Alliance in June 2010. Then on February 1, 2014, it took over a non-public service route. Previously, Olympic Air managed the routes, which were then acquired.
