Kemaman Museum is a small museum that was renovated into an old bank building owned by the Malayan Banking. The building has been one of the main attractions in Chukai, the capital town of the district. The museum is relatively new as it was recently opened, just two years ago in 2016. The museum holds the histories and stories of Terengganu, with more focus towards the district of Kemaman.

The museum also holds pictures and artefacts that show the transformation of the district and also the state. The museum is divided into two floors; the first showing mostly about Kemaman and how it had progressed while the second floor holds the histories about a number of important figures in Kemaman, including leaders, academicians, clerics and also athletes that have brought pride to the district. The Kemaman Museum opens every day, except on Friday, from nine in the morning until five in the evening. There is no entrance fee being imposed on visitors.

How to Get There

By Car

Driving to Kemaman from Kuala Lumpur will take about three hours and fifteen minutes for a 300-kilometres journey via the East Coast Highway. If from Kuala Terengganu, the capital city of the state, the trip to Kemaman will take almost two hours, also via the East Coast Highway.

By Bus

There are daily trips from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, Kuala Lumpur, to Kemaman. The ticket price starts at RM 29 per trip. Each coach trip usually will have one stop along the way from Kuala Lumpur to Kemaman. It will take somewhere from five to seven hours, depending on the coach companies as some will pick up passengers in several bus stations along the way. The distance between the bus station in Kemaman to the museum is only four kilometres away.

By Plane

While the district of Kemaman itself does not have an airport, there are two airports that are quite close to it. The first airport is a small airport in Kerteh, a sub-district in Kemaman, which is located about forty kilometres away and the drive will take about forty minutes or so. Currently, only Malindo Airline that has flights to Kerteh and the flights are all originating from Subang Airport. The other airport is in Kuantan, the Sultan Ahmad Shah and only Malaysia Airlines fly from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. The distance from the airport in Kuantan to Kemaman will take about one-hour drive via the Kuantan-Kemaman route.

Kuala Kemaman

This is an area where the end of the Kemaman River meets the open sea, the bay of Kemaman. The area is usually filled with locals, especially fishermen. During late in the morning, people will flock the area to buy the very fresh catch of the day directly from the fishermen as this is cheaper and definitely fresher than buying on the market. The Kemaman Bay is also popular as a place to hang out while enjoying the ocean breeze and local snacks that are made from fish such as keropok lekor, sate, and also otak-otak, a slice of fish covered in strong, flavourful paste, grilled over coals. Kuala Kemaman is only eight kilometres away from the Kemaman Muzium. It is recommended to come there around four in the evening to enjoy the local snacks.

Hai Peng Kopitiam

This is one of the popular spots in the surrounding district of Kemaman. Some even drive from Kuantan just to have their breakfast there. Hai Peng Kopitiam is a known spot in the district and the place is usually filled with customers early in the morning. There are several coffee selections available, the Kopitiam kind of caffeine fix. You won’t find any lattes here but there is definitely coffee in condensed milk. For those who like a dosage of caffeine, this place is a must-go place in Kemaman. The kopitiam is just 700 meters from the museum, located on the same stretch of road.
