Newcastle Airport, officially Newcastle International Airport (NCL), is the main airport for North East England. It stands at Woolsington in Tyne and Wear, about 9 km north-west of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre, and the Tyne and Wear Metro stops right at the terminal. All flights use one passenger terminal, with separate domestic and international arrivals inside it. The airport is run by Newcastle International Airport Limited, a partnership in which seven North East local authorities hold the majority share.
For travellers from Malaysia, the key point is that Newcastle has no direct flight to Singapore. The airport lists one-stop connections instead: Air France via Paris, British Airways via London Heathrow, Emirates via Dubai and KLM via Amsterdam. This guide covers the airlines in the terminal, the Metro and other links into the city, parking, facilities and tips for the day you fly.
Newcastle Airport has a single terminal building for domestic and international flights, so there is no terminal to choose. The airport's own directory lists these airlines:
Your e-ticket names the airline operating your flight. On a connecting ticket from Malaysia, check which carrier flies the Newcastle leg, as it may not be the one that sold you the ticket.
The A1 and A696 bring drivers to the terminal front, and the Metro gives a car-free link to the city. Fares are shown at the station, on the bus or by the operator.
The Airport Metro station is at the terminal, on the green line. Trains reach Newcastle city centre (Haymarket, Monument or Central Station) in around 25 minutes, and Sunderland in about 55 to 60 minutes. It is the simplest way into town if you are travelling light.
The airport's official taxi firm has a booking office in the arrivals hall, with the pick-up point just outside arrivals. Book there rather than looking for a car on the kerb.
Local buses stop opposite the terminal, with Monday to Saturday services, and further routes call on the B6918 nearby. Check the route and timetable before you travel.
Car hire desks are on the ground floor opposite domestic arrivals. A hire car suits trips further around the North East.
Newcastle Airport has parking for short visits and longer trips. Express pick-up and drop-off and Short Stay 1 are directly outside the terminal, while Short Stay 2, Long Stay and Premium Long Stay are a short walk away. Premium Meet and Greet and Premium Fast Track parking sit next to check-in. If you are collecting someone, the free Airport Waiting Zone is at Callerton Parkway, linked to the terminal by a free shuttle bus. Charges vary by car park and length of stay, so check them on the airport's website.
Here is what the terminal offers, starting with the topics travellers ask about most.
The Aspire Lounge has three pre-bookable options, including Suite by Aspire, which looks out over the airfield. Book ahead, as entry is by reservation, membership or ticket class.
Check-in and the Passenger Assistance desk are landside. From there you go through security into the departure lounge and on to the gates. Arriving international passengers pass border control before baggage reclaim, and car hire desks are on the ground floor opposite domestic arrivals.
Food outlets are in the check-in area before security and in the departure lounge after security. There is also a bar-restaurant with runway views airside.
Duty-free and other shops are in the departure lounge, and you can reserve duty free in advance and collect it on the way out. A health and travel essentials store stocks baby milk and baby products. On-site medical help is first aid only.
Smoking and vaping are not allowed inside the terminal. Before security, use the smoking shelters at the front of the building. After security, there is an outdoor smoking area at the back of one of the bars.
Left luggage is handled at the Oversized Baggage desk, before security near Passenger Assistance.
A multi-faith prayer room and quiet space is inside the terminal near the security entrance, and a chaplaincy team is on site.
Free Wi-Fi covers the whole terminal on the _NCLFreeWiFi network, with a faster paid option. A currency exchange bureau operates both landside and airside, and there are ATMs throughout. Families will find baby-change stations before and after security, a Changing Places toilet in the check-in area and a special assistance team for passengers who need help.
The airport asks passengers to arrive at least 2 hours before a scheduled flight and at least 3 hours before a charter flight. There is no need to come earlier than 3 hours. The UK aviation information lists customs, immigration and security as operating 24 hours, with no night curfew listed.
Arriving from abroad, you clear UK border control before collecting your bags. Entry requirements for the United Kingdom, including any travel authorisation, are set by the government, so check the official guidance for your passport well before you travel. The fare cards on this page show fares from Newcastle to the routes on sale. Further down the page, the Newcastle Airport schedule tables group upcoming flights by date and give the airline and planned times for each. They show a selection of flights, not every service, so use them as a starting point for your search.
