The rooftop mixed onsen was a big surprise, but super nice as we don't usually get to be with family members of other sex. (You do provide basic swimwear). It was so nice to look over the lake and just chill out in the onsen upstairs, but the main onsen were also incredible. Food options were plenty in the restaurant (buffet style), and it's so close to the Ainu Kotan... definitely worth a visit!!

Clearly when this hotel was new, it was a fabulous place. However, the property is now extremely dated, with 80s style decor throughout, and most seriously, poorly-maintained rooms containing worn and damaged furniture. The bathroom fittings have their original chrome scrubbed away. The towels were provided in multiple colours. The staff were very helpful, and were not at fault at all. The onsen facilities, while dated and in need of a refresh, were good. Although staying for two nights, we were unfortunately unable to sample the rooftop pool as it was closed due to high winds, when the wind was certainly not a problem on one day. The saving grace was the breakfast, which was plentiful and provided lots of choice. If you are aware that you're going to stay at a place possibly not refreshed since the 1980s, it's ok, but otherwise you may prefer to pay a little more and be sure of reaching a reasonable minimum standard.

It should be renamed the Old Akan Hotel, as the rooms are probably 1960s in style and amenity. It was definitely overpriced, given the small bathroom and bedroom. The bathroom was so small, there was not even space to put bottles of shampoo and body soap. These were provided in sachets. The hotel seems to have had a facelift on the outside and in the lobby and restaurant areas, but the rooms were ordinary. Not worth the money charged.

The front desk was a little standoff ish. I arrived at 9pm and you would have thought the world was ending. Just a massive hotel with a lot of people. The onsen was super crowded and lots of the surrounding restaurants close earlier than mentioned. A bit pricey for the style of room, but very limited availability in the area.

The hotel is conveniently located on the site of Lake Akan, and our room had a stunning view of the lake. However, overall the room was very old-fashioned - we wondered if it had been renovated since the hotel opened - and it has the tiniest bathroom I have ever seen in Japan. It is so tiny that is difficult to use the toilets comfortably, and some visitors may have problems entering the bathroom. The hotel "upgraded" the toilets by adding a Washlet seat system, but the seat is too big for the old-fashioned toilet bowl and makes the space seem even smaller. Be careful when using the bathtub, as the bathroom floor flooded easily. The dinner and breakfast buffets offered a wide variety of good food with a nice view of the lake. It is a pity, however, that the breakfast buffet only offers margarine, especially since Hokkaido is a great producer of butter.
