Bukit Merah is a quaint little town located in Taiping, about 45 minutes away from the Penang Island. This town, known mainly for the Bukit Merah Water Theme Park is slowly becoming a major tourist destination.
Bukit Merah is located near the Semanggol Mountain, in Taiping and thanks to the damp that was built here, a part of Bukit Merah was turned into a wide fresh water lake. The other half was changed into Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, the main tourist attraction in Bukit Merah.
The KTMB train passes through the Bukit Merah Lake and one of the best sunsets facing the lake get to be viewed towards the evening from the train. It is indeed one spectacular view.
You can get to Bukit Merah by bus. You can take a bus either from any inter-state bus station provided. If you take a bus from the south like Johor, Negeri Sembilan and so on, your travel period may be estimated to take between 6 and 7 hours depending on the location.
You can also drive there. Travel duration is similar to taking the bus. If you drive north, it may take about 6 to 7 hours to arrive. Like buses too, the travel duration can change based on the starting point of your journey and the traffic situation at that time can also play a role.
Tucked away on the 35-acre Pulau Orang Utan, Orang Utan Island is the world's first and only 5-acre rehabilitation and preservation facility where Orang Utans roam free. The unique island serves as a breeding sanctuary as well as conservation, research and education center to better understand this endangered species. There is a boat service that ferries people to and from the Island every 30-45 minutes. Entrance is RM15 for Adults and RM10 for children. Children below 90cm will not be admitted.
