Wakaf Che Yeh is a small town in Kelantan, Malaysia and located about 7 kilometres from Kota Bharu town. Wakaf Che Yeh is the largest market in the state which also serves as the main wholesale market in the North East. It was named after a waqf that had been built at the junction of Jalan Kuala Krai-Salor and this place was built by a charitable and noted man named Che Yeh as a resting place for those who were travelling to and from Kota Bharu. The town is famous for its daily and weekly market selling local snacks, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as seafood. One may also find rows upon rows of stalls selling men’s and women’s clothing. In the morning, one will find a wholesale market while in the afternoon, a wet market takes its place. Once the sun sets, a night market takes over Wakaf Che Yeh. The night market or pasar malam as it is locally known is open seven days a week and comes alive at night.

How to Get There

Wakaf Che Yeh is approximately 5 kilometres south of Kota Bharu. From Kuala Lumpur, you can drive using Kuala Lumpur or Gua Musang highway to Wakaf Che Yeh which will take around 6 hours and 30 minutes. There is an alternative road which is to take the North South highway and this road consume a longer time for another 30 minutes. Besides that, you can fly to Kota Bahru Airport for around 50 minutes and take taxi or rent a car to Wakaf Che Yeh for another 30 minutes using Kuala Krai road or Long Yunus road.

Siti Khadijah Market

Siti Khadijah Market or Pasar besar Siti Khadijah is the biggest local wet market in Kelantan. Its name is taken after Prophet Muhammad's wife, whom is known for her entrepreneurial skill which shows this market is mostly run by women. Many fresh produce available here such as seafood, vegetables and wide variety of fruits and you can also find ready-to eat food like 'ayam percik', nasi ulam and a variety of noodle soups, all unique in flavors and taste of Kelantan. There are also desserts like 'kuih muih' ,tempeh and hot milk tea, which is the staple drink for Kelantanese.

Pantai Irama Bachok

This beach got its name from the gently hushing sound of the sea breeze and known to be the most beautiful beach in Kelantan. The beauty of the beach comes from its clear blue water and also to the facilities available for visitors. Apart from basic facilities like motels, public toilets and restaurants, there are also water sports, boat for hire and barbeque facilities to make your visit more interesting. This beach has become popular among local and international tourists for its beauty and its strategic place for hang out with family and friends.

Speaking to the locals, you may encounter difficulty as many here speak Kelantanese where it is a different dialect and hard for the city people to understand. Many of the traders speak basic English so communication is easy here. The market closes at about midnight but the wholesale market does on the entire day. On the other hand, Kelantan is known for its monsoon weather at the end of the year specifically around November and December. Therefore, visitors are advised to be aware of the weather and avoid areas that are prone to flooding.
