Kota Bharu is the state capital of Kelantan and located on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Historically, Kota Bharu was founded during the late 19th century and it was a home to Kelantan's Royal Palace then was established by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan in 1844. It was known as Kuala Kelantan. During the 19th century, Kelantan was a prosperous and populous state which holds a population of around 30,000 to 50,000 people including Chinese. The vast majority of Kota Bharu's population is ethnically Kelantanese Malay which have distinct language and culture compared to other parts of Malaysia. Besides Malay and Chinese, there are also minority Tamil, Siamese and Orang Asli that resides in the city. The total population of Kota Bharu as at 2010 is 491,237. Other than that, among the productions from the state are gold, tin ore, black pepper, areca nut, rice, rattan, bamboo, agarwood and songket.

How to Get There

By Car

From Kuala Lumpur, you can drive through Kuala Lumpur or Gua Musang highway to Kota Bharu city centre which will take around 6 hours and 30 minutes. There is an alternative road which is to take the North South highway and this road consume a longer time for another 30 minutes.

By Plane

Besides that, you can fly to Kota Bharu Airport for around 50 minutes and take taxi or rent a car to Kota Bharu city centre for another 20 minutes using Pengkalan Chepa road.

Pantai Irama Bachok

This beach got its name from the gently hushing sound of the sea breeze and known to be the most beautiful beach in Kelantan. The beauty of the beach comes from its clear blue water and also to the facilities available for visitors. Apart from basic facilities like motels, public toilets and restaurants, there are also water sports, boat for hire and barbeque facilities to make your visit more interesting. This beach has become popular among local and international tourists for its beauty and its strategic place for hang out with family and friends.

Siti Khadijah Market

Siti Khadijah Market or Pasar besar Siti Khadijah is the biggest local wet market in Kelantan. Its name is taken after Prophet Muhammad's wife, whom is known for her entrepreneurial skill which shows this market is mostly run by women. Many fresh produce available here such as seafood, vegetables and wide variety of fruits and you can also find ready-to eat food like 'ayam percik', nasi ulam and a variety of noodle soups, all unique in flavors and taste of Kelantan. There are also desserts like 'kuih muih' ,tempeh and hot milk tea, which is the staple drink for Kelantanese.
