Your Travel Guide to Kota Bharu as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Kota Bharu from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Kota Bharu from Kuala Lumpur is a common route for many Malaysians, and several convenient options are available. The quickest way is by air. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) to Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBK) in Kota Bharu typically take around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can range from MYR 150 to MYR 300 or more, depending on the airline and how far in advance you book flight.

For those who prefer a more scenic and economical journey, traveling by bus is a popular choice. Numerous bus companies operate daily services from major cities like Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Kuantan to the Kota Bharu Bus Terminal. The journey from Kuala Lumpur can take approximately 7 to 9 hours, with ticket prices generally ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 70. This option is ideal for travelers who want to save on costs and enjoy the Malaysian landscape.

Driving to Kota Bharu offers the most flexibility, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding areas of Kelantan. From Kuala Lumpur, the journey involves taking the East Coast Expressway (LPT) towards Kuantan, then continuing north. The total driving time is around 6 to 7 hours, covering a distance of approximately 500-600 kilometers. Toll charges can add up, so budget around MYR 50-70 for tolls each way.

Best Time to Visit Kota Bharu

The climate in Kota Bharu, like much of Malaysia, is tropical, characterized by high temperatures and humidity year-round. The best time to visit Kota Bharu for most Malaysian travelers is generally between March and September. During these months, the weather tends to be drier, with less rainfall, making it more pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions.

The monsoon season typically occurs from October to February, with heavier rainfall and potentially rougher seas along the east coast. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices, travel plans could be disrupted by adverse weather. If you visit during the monsoon, be prepared for rain and check weather forecasts regularly.

For those seeking to experience local festivals and events, it's worth checking the Kelantan tourism calendar. Major celebrations often coincide with national holidays or specific cultural events, offering a deeper insight into the local way of life. Visiting during these times can add a unique dimension to your trip, though accommodation might be more sought after.

Food and Dining Near Kota Bharu — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Kota Bharu is a culinary destination for those who appreciate authentic Malaysian flavors, especially the distinct tastes of Kelantan. A must-try dish is Nasi Kerabu, a visually striking blue-hued rice salad infused with herbs, toasted coconut, and served with various accompaniments like fried chicken or fish crackers. Its unique flavor profile is a true representation of Kelantanese cuisine.

Another local specialty that delights the palate is Laksam. This dish features thick, white rice noodles served in a rich, savory gravy made from fish and coconut milk, often garnished with fresh herbs and chili. It’s a comforting and flavorful meal, perfect for any time of day. You can find excellent versions at local eateries and food stalls throughout the city.

For a taste of something different, try Ayam Percik, grilled chicken marinated in a spicy and sweet concoction of chili, turmeric, and coconut milk, then basted as it cooks. The smoky char and the complex flavors of the marinade make it incredibly addictive. Many restaurants and night markets offer this popular dish.

Don't leave Kota Bharu without sampling its famous Kuih Muih, or traditional Malay sweets. From the chewy texture of Kuih Lapis to the sweet filling of Onde-onde, these delightful treats are perfect with a cup of teh tarik. You can find a wide assortment at local markets and bakeries, offering a sweet conclusion to your culinary journey.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Kota Bharu

Kelantan, and Kota Bharu in particular, has a strong cultural identity deeply influenced by Islamic traditions. Modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional areas. While casual wear is acceptable for tourists, it's advisable to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, particularly for women.

Safety in Kota Bharu is generally very good, with low crime rates. However, as with any travel, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets like Siti Khadijah. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. In case of emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

For seamless travel, having a few essential apps on your smartphone is highly recommended. Grab is indispensable for e-hailing transportation, offering convenient and affordable rides across the city. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for cashless payments at many establishments and for topping up highway tolls. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be relevant for entry into certain venues.

Familiarizing yourself with basic Malay phrases can also enhance your interactions with locals. Simple greetings like "Selamat Pagi" (Good morning) or "Terima Kasih" (Thank you) are always appreciated and can lead to warmer exchanges. Embracing the local culture respectfully will undoubtedly enrich your experience in Kota Bharu.

Nothing to be satisfied. For a 3 star hotel this is shameful. There are only 5 parking lots for hotel guests, a 3 star hotel? Toilet door rotting, wash basin clogged up, water heater not functioning. Side table dirty & dilapidated. Smell of rat urine in the room.

Bad: smell room, uncomfortable pillow, slow shower, room need to be refurbished, limited parking, hotel do not provide parking coupon. For the price I paid, could get a nice clean hotel in kuala terengganu Good: very near to all attractions, next to palace museum. location in front of the best nasi ulam cikgu.

Comfortable room. The hotel's strategic location is close to the market and dining areas. Good hotel worker service.

The food is good but not the room. It's full of mosquito and there's an unidentified animal under the bed.

1. Aircond works but not cool. After 12 o'clock a new cold feeling. 2. The bathroom door is not close. Can see people in the bathroom. 3. Shower does not come out. Forced to tap the toilet near the toilet. 4. The TV picture is not clear.

The carpet looks dirty and unsatisfactory, the parking lot is difficult, the room where I stay there is a pipe leak over the ceiling, causing me to call the hotel worker.

The location is good but facility wise a little bit awkward...no fridge, need to go to public area to iron your clothes, limited parking lot, the TV limited channel and the reception is not good, the only clear picture is TV2

Quite nice hotel, but it’s actually a little bit an old hotel. At first, at the reception,i have given a room which is not housekeeping yet. Fortunately, it was changed and I got a new room after that.
