Overview of Borneo Royale Hotel

Situated in the heart of

Tawau, Sabah

, the Borneo Royale Hotel stands as one of the town's most recognisable three-star establishments, offering travellers a comfortable and well-appointed base from which to explore the southeastern corner of Malaysian Borneo. Positioned along

Jalan Kuhara at Mile 1

within the Eastern Plaza commercial district, the hotel enjoys an address that places guests within easy reach of Tawau's key commercial areas, government offices, and transport links, making it an ideal choice for both business travellers and leisure guests looking to discover this vibrant coastal town.

With

180 rooms

spread across several room categories, Borneo Royale Hotel delivers a standard of comfort and convenience that exceeds expectations for a three-star property. From the moment guests step through the lobby doors, the attentive service provided by the

24-hour front desk

team sets the tone for a stay defined by hospitality and professionalism. Whether you are in Tawau for a corporate assignment, en route to the world-famous dive sites of Semporna, or simply exploring the natural wonders of Sabah's southeast coast, this hotel provides a dependable and welcoming retreat.

What truly distinguishes the Borneo Royale Hotel from its competitors in Tawau is the breadth of facilities it offers within a single property. Guests have access to a fully equipped gymnasium, a sauna, a dedicated spa, and an on-site restaurant — a combination rarely found at this price point in the region. The hotel's central location, paired with these comprehensive amenities, makes it a consistently popular choice among travellers seeking both comfort and value in Tawau.

Room Types at Borneo Royale Hotel

Borneo Royale Hotel offers four distinct room categories, each designed to cater to different travel needs and group sizes. All rooms feature

air conditioning

and

complimentary WiFi

, ensuring a comfortable and connected stay regardless of which category you select.

Superior Room

The

Superior Room

is the entry-level accommodation option at Borneo Royale Hotel and is ideal for solo travellers or couples seeking a straightforward, comfortable stay. These well-maintained rooms are furnished with either a queen-sized or twin bed configuration, providing a restful night's sleep after a day of exploring Tawau or attending to business matters. Guests can expect in-room air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot and cold shower facilities, a flat-screen television, a work desk, and complimentary WiFi access. The Superior Room strikes an excellent balance between functionality and comfort, making it the most accessible option within the hotel's portfolio.

Deluxe Room

Stepping up from the Superior Room, the

Deluxe Room

offers additional space and enhanced furnishings for guests who appreciate a more refined in-room experience. Available in both double and twin configurations, Deluxe Rooms feature upgraded soft furnishings, a larger work and relaxation area, and improved room décor that reflects the hotel's commitment to a higher standard of comfort. The Deluxe Room is a popular choice among business travellers who require more functional space for extended stays, as well as couples looking for a slightly more indulgent retreat. All the essential amenities of the Superior Room are present here, with the added benefit of more generous living quarters and a heightened sense of style.

Executive Suite

For guests who demand the finest in-room experience that Borneo Royale Hotel has to offer, the

Executive Suite

represents the pinnacle of the hotel's accommodation range. This generously proportioned suite features a distinct living area separated from the sleeping quarters, creating a home-away-from-home environment suited to senior executives, VIP guests, and those celebrating special occasions. The Executive Suite is appointed with premium furnishings, enhanced bathroom facilities, and thoughtful additional touches that elevate the stay considerably. Guests occupying the Executive Suite also benefit from priority check-in service and access to the full range of hotel amenities, including the spa and gymnasium, making it an exceptionally well-rounded luxury option for Tawau.

Family Room

Designed with the needs of travelling families firmly in mind, the

Family Room

at Borneo Royale Hotel provides generous space and flexible sleeping arrangements to accommodate parents and children comfortably under one roof. These rooms are configured to sleep a larger number of guests without compromising on comfort, featuring multiple beds or a combination of a king bed and additional single sleeping arrangements. The Family Room is thoughtfully laid out to ensure that all members of the family have adequate space to relax and unwind, with all standard amenities including air conditioning, WiFi, television, and private bathroom facilities readily available. Families travelling to Tawau on holiday will find these rooms a practical and comfortable base for their adventures.

Facilities and Amenities

One of the most compelling reasons to choose Borneo Royale Hotel over other three-star options in Tawau is the remarkable breadth of facilities available to guests throughout their stay. The hotel's

fully equipped gymnasium

provides all the essential cardio and resistance training equipment needed to maintain a fitness routine whilst travelling, a facility that business guests in particular tend to appreciate during extended visits.

For those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, the hotel's

sauna

and dedicated

spa

facilities offer a welcome retreat from the tropical heat and the demands of travel. The spa team provides a range of treatments designed to soothe tired muscles and restore a sense of calm, making it an ideal post-flight or post-excursion treat. These wellness facilities, combined under one roof at a three-star property, represent genuine added value for guests.

Practical amenities are equally well covered at Borneo Royale Hotel.

Complimentary WiFi

is available throughout the property, ensuring seamless connectivity for both leisure and business guests. The hotel features a reliable

elevator

servicing all floors, ensuring accessibility for all guests including those with mobility considerations. Ample

parking

is available on-site at the property, a significant convenience given the Eastern Plaza location and the volume of vehicles in Tawau's commercial districts. The

24-hour front desk

ensures that assistance, local information, and check-in services are available at any hour of the day or night.

Location and Getting There

Borneo Royale Hotel's address at

Eastern Plaza, Jalan Kuhara, Mile 1, Tawau

places it in one of the town's most accessible and well-connected locations. Tawau itself is the third largest town in Sabah and serves as the primary urban hub for the southeastern region of Malaysian Borneo, making it a key gateway for travellers heading to Semporna, Lahad Datu, and the surrounding natural attractions.

Guests arriving by air will land at

Tawau Airport (TWU)

, which is located approximately 5 to 6 kilometres from the hotel. The journey from the airport to the property takes around 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, with fares from approximately RM 20 to RM 30 depending on traffic conditions. Taxis and ride-hailing services are readily available at the airport arrival hall. For those travelling by road from other parts of Sabah, Tawau is accessible via the Pan-Borneo Highway network, and the hotel's prominent location on Jalan Kuhara makes it straightforward to locate.

Guests using Borneo Royale Hotel as a base for day trips will find that

Semporna

, the world-renowned diving gateway to Sipadan Island, is approximately 90 to 100 kilometres away and reachable by road in around one and a half to two hours.

Tawau Hills Park

, a protected forest reserve known for its hot springs, waterfalls, and rich biodiversity, is situated roughly 24 kilometres from the town centre. The nearby

Tawau town market

and waterfront areas are within a short driving distance, offering guests an authentic taste of local commerce and culture.

Dining at Borneo Royale Hotel

Guests at Borneo Royale Hotel need not venture far for a satisfying meal, as the property is home to an

on-site restaurant

that serves a range of local and international dishes throughout the day. The restaurant provides a convenient dining option for guests who prefer to eat within the comfort and familiarity of the hotel, whether they are grabbing a quick breakfast before an early morning meeting or settling in for a more leisurely dinner after a day of sightseeing.

Breakfast service at the hotel restaurant is particularly popular among guests, with a selection designed to cater to a variety of tastes and dietary preferences. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the dining space makes it an equally suitable venue for informal business lunches and family meals. The kitchen team takes pride in showcasing the flavours of Sabah alongside more universally familiar dishes, ensuring that all guests — whether local or international — find something to enjoy on the menu.

Beyond the hotel's own restaurant, the

Jalan Kuhara

corridor and the surrounding Eastern Plaza commercial district are home to numerous independent eateries, coffee shops, and local food stalls. Tawau's vibrant food scene reflects its multicultural heritage, and guests willing to explore will discover everything from fresh seafood restaurants to traditional Sabahan fare and halal establishments within a short drive or walk from the hotel.

Why Stay at Borneo Royale Hotel

Comprehensive wellness facilities

set Borneo Royale Hotel apart from the majority of three-star properties in Tawau. The combination of a gymnasium, sauna, and spa under one roof means that guests have access to a level of wellness infrastructure that is typically associated with four-star and above establishments. This is a genuine differentiator for health-conscious travellers and those who prioritise recovery and relaxation during their stay.

Strategic location

is another major advantage. Being positioned on Jalan Kuhara at Mile 1, within the Eastern Plaza district, means guests are close to business hubs, government offices, banking facilities, and local amenities. Whether you are attending to official matters in Tawau or using the city as a jumping-off point for Semporna's legendary dive sites, the location minimises transit time and maximises the productive hours of your trip.

The hotel's

24-hour front desk service

provides genuine peace of mind, particularly for travellers arriving on late-night or early-morning flights into Tawau Airport. Knowing that a friendly and knowledgeable team member will be available regardless of arrival time is a comfort that many guests consistently highlight in their reviews. The availability of

on-site parking

is an additional practical benefit that resonates strongly with guests arriving by private vehicle or rental car.

With

four distinct room categories

ranging from the accessible Superior Room to the spacious Executive Suite, Borneo Royale Hotel caters effectively to a wide spectrum of travellers. Solo business visitors, couples on leisure breaks, families on holiday, and executive-level guests can all find a room type tailored to their needs within a single property. This versatility makes the hotel a natural default choice for corporate travel managers booking accommodation in Tawau.

Tips for Booking Borneo Royale Hotel

If you are planning a visit to Tawau during the

peak tourism season

, which typically corresponds with school holidays in Malaysia — particularly in June, August, and December — it is advisable to book your room at Borneo Royale Hotel well in advance. The hotel's popularity as both a business and leisure destination means that availability, especially for the Family Room and Executive Suite categories, can become limited during these high-demand periods. Booking early through Traveloka ensures you secure your preferred room type at the best available rate.

Guests travelling for

business purposes

should consider the Deluxe Room or Executive Suite for extended stays, as the additional workspace and enhanced comfort levels make a meaningful difference when you are away from home for several nights or more. If your schedule permits flexibility,

mid-week arrivals

from Sunday through Thursday tend to see lower occupancy rates, which may translate to greater room availability and more favourable conditions overall.

When checking in, do not hesitate to communicate any specific preferences or requirements to the front desk team at check-in time, including high-floor room requests for improved views over Tawau town, or proximity to the elevator for guests with mobility requirements. The

check-in time is from 14:00

and

check-out is by 12:00 noon

— guests requiring early check-in or late check-out should request this at the time of booking or contact the hotel directly in advance, as availability permitting, the team is often able to accommodate such requests. Guests planning to use the

spa facilities

are also advised to enquire about treatment bookings upon arrival, as popular time slots can fill quickly during busier periods.

There is a very strong smell of cigarettes in the bedroom. The bathroom is outdated, and the shower is non-functional. Additionally, there are visible stains on the bedsheets and curtains. The television does not work, and there were strange loud noises throughout the night that made it impossible to sleep.
