Lahad Datu is a town and district located in Tawau Division in the east of Sabah, Malaysia on the island of Borneo. It occupies the peninsula on the north side of Darvel Bay. As of 2010, its population was estimated to be around 199,830. Lahad Datu is surrounded by stretches of cocoa and oil palm plantations and become important timber exporting port. Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustess had resolved on November 28, 1980 to leave an area within Yayasan Sabah concession and reserved for purpose of conservation. The area administered informally as Conservation Area in recognition of its outstanding biodiversity value. In 1982, the Interagency Danum Valley Management Committee was established, comprising Yayasan Sabah, the Sabah Forestry Department, the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and several other agencies. The Forest Management Plan of Yayasan Sabah Concession Area was drawn up and approved by the State Cabinet in 1984. In May 1995, the area was declared a Class I (protection) Forest Reserve by the Sabah Legislative Assembly and in 1999, Danum Valley Conservation Area was further gazetted under The Cultural Heritage (Conservation) Enactment 1998, as a Cultural Heritage (Conservation) Area. Now, the Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) is a 438 square kilometres tract and has become a unique area and one of attractions inLahad Datu.
Tabin Wildlife Reserve is a home to various endangered wildlife such as the Borneo Pygmy elephants, Tembadau and exotic birdlife. Besides that, three largest mammals of Sabah which are the Borneo elephant, Bornean rhinoceros and tembadau (Bos javanicus) can also be found within the reserve. The elephant population has been estimated to 120- 300 animals in 1993 and other ungulate species include sambar, muntjac and mouse deer. In addition, seven of Sabah´s eight primate species are also present like orang utan and proboscis monkey.
