"Basel Christian Church of Malaysia" (BCCM) is known for its missionary work and awareness among the native population of Sabah. Historically, the establishment of a settlement by the British North Borneo Company in North Borneo started in December 1882 when an initial group of 100 Hakka Chinese Christian laborers from mainland China landed at Kudat, a town in the northern part of North Borneo. The Hakka immigrants worked hard on their land for six days and rested only on Sundays. The Hakka Christians who came along with the other immigrants set up their own worship places on the west coast and other parts of Sabah.
Rudolph Lechler of the Basel Mission enthusiastically supported the scheme and Hakka Christians from the Basel Mission and the Basel established Chongzhen Church. Basel Tawau Church was founded on 1st August 1989 by Stephen Chin Chee Kai. Currently, this church is led by Captain Vincent Teo Kok Meng and the language used is Chinese.

Teck Guan Cocoa Museum is located at Tawau and known for its cocoa industry. This museum is exclusive for true chocolate lover and it exhibits the history of its development over the years. The Teck Guan Cocoa Museum is managed by a private company named Majulah Koko Tawau Sdn. Bhd. at Tanjung Batu Laut. Visitors can watch the process of production of cocoa and this company also sell its own products from chocolate jam to instant hot cocoa beverages. This museum starts its operation from Monday to Friday at 8am to 5pm and Saturday from 8am to 1pm. The fee is RM10 that includes entrance to the museum, refreshment, a 20-minute video presentation, and a short tour to the cocoa factory.
