Terengganu Irrigation and Drainage Division or Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS) in Malay was established in 1957 and administered by Drainage Engineer and Terengganu / Kelantan Engineer. Currently, Terengganu State Irrigation and Drainage Department has over 500 officers compared from a small organization with a staff of less than 100. At the State DID Headquarters, there are 6 divisions that assist the top management of the Irrigation and Drainage Division, River and Coastal Engineering, Hydrology and Technical Services, and Administration and Finance.
The main aim of JPS is to handle water resources, river basins, flood risks and seafront zones and to achieve a sustainable environment and improved quality of life. JPS Terengganu acts as to develop, manage and maintain flood irrigation, drainage and mitigation facilities as well as carry out river maintenance work to support the development and progress of the agricultural sector, particularly for the benefit of the smallholders.
From Kuala Lumpur, it takes approximately 7 hours to reach JPS Terengganu by using Segamat- Kuantan highway depends on traffic.
There are flights daily to Kuala Terengganu or Sultan Mahmud Airport from Subang and Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Once you reach at the airport, it takes another 15 minutes to reach JPS Terengganu via Tengku Ampuan Bariah road.
Rantau Abang Beach is one of the famous tourist destinations for watching turtles to lay eggs. Visitors are recommended to come between May and August. It is located around 22 kilometres north of Kuala Dungun and 80 kilometres from Kuala Terengganu, As year goes by, more turtles are dying and lately it is said that turtles are rarely seen landing in Rantau Abang. The main reason is that many turtle eggs are stolen and sold for consumption. This leads to establishment of conservation centre to help in nurturing remaining turtles from extinct. Besides that, there is a turtle information centre describing on turtle life as well as information on turtle landing distribution in Terengganu state. The centre is open every Sunday to Thursday at 8.00 am - 5.00 pm and close on Friday, Saturday and public holidays and the entrance is free.
This natural island is one of the most beautiful attractions among divers and snorkels. At Tenggol Island, visitors can find coral formations and a number of submerged rocks with excellent coral growths. There are also marine life, including sharks, rays, nudibranch and a wide variety of hard and soft corals. Pulau Tenggol is a protected island so the fish life here are variety and among the common fish is Batfish and also shrimps, crabs, sea slugs and other sea creatures.
