Kuala Dungun the capital of Dungun District, Terengganu, Malaysia. It is situated midway between Tanjung Jara and Paka. It is just a few kilometres from the main road heading to Kuala Terengganu that is the capital state of Terengganu. In 1940’s Kuala Dungun was known as the iron mining village. However after the exhaustion of the material, it has now sourced their income through fishing. Kuala Dungun is now a fishing village. Kuala Dunging is no more than a quiet coastal fishing village in east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The town only has a few rows of old shop houses catered to the needs of the people.

If it wasn’t because of the existence of the famous Pulau Tenggol, Kuala Dungun can be quite a dead village. There is located the jetty to get to Pulau Tenggol which is accessible via speedboat in 1 hour. However, yearly the leatherback turtle do visit the village to lay their eggs. This has contributed to their economy too.

The river in Kuala Dungun on the other hand, is one of the spot to fish for freshwater fish as well as to do bamboo rafting. By using this river, one can go to Ceralak Waterfalls using a boat.

How to Get There

By Plane

There are flights to Kuala Terengganu provided by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. From the airport, guests may hail up a taxi to Kuala Dungun.

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive through the East Coast Expressway exiting at Kuala Terengganu. This route will start from Kuala Lumpur, to Karak and moves on to Kuala Terengganu.

By Bus

From Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, Kuala Lumpur there are plenty of bus companies that offers a bus ride to the town of Dungun itself. Some of the companies are Sani Express, Express Kesatuan and many more. The cost is also very reasonable at around RM36.50 per way.

Night Market

Kuala Dungun is just another town on the coast of Malaysia. The town only caters to the needs of the people therefore there are no entertainment for the people. The town only comes alive on Thursday nights when the night market is opened. It is the biggest night market in Terengganu and features second hand clothing at a very cheap price. They are imported from overseas. There are also all sorts of food to choose from. Many people from the outskirts come to town to get their hands on the cheap goods. The night market is situated in the center of the town which usually expands until the old railway line.

Pulau Tenggol

Kuala Dungun holds the spot for boats to take the tourists to this island. This island is similar to Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang only it is much smaller. Just like those islands, Pulau Tenggol has one of the best sea life that can be offered. It is very suitable for those who wish to scuba dive. There are also resorts build here for those who wish to spend their night there.
