Paka is located about 100 kilometres to the south of Kuala Terengganu and it is known as a coastal town facing the South China Sea in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. This town is popularly known as the home for the largest power station in Malaysia run by the national power company, Tenaga Nasional and also listed as the third place in Malaysia with the highest living cost. There are flights available from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Sultan Mahmud airport such as Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines which takes less than an hour. Rantau Abang is a small village which used to be known for its Leatherback Sea Turtle nesting. Every year during the months of May to August, the turtles would come ashore and lay their eggs. However, the number of sea turtles that lay their eggs has severely decreased in recent years. The Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre has been set up in Rantau Abang to act as conservation reserve for these turtles. On a different note, most part of the beaches is safe for swimming although some are restricted by the Fisheries Department for turtle conservation purposes. The beach is open for all kind of beach activities such as beach volleyball, picnic, kite flying and camping.
