We stayed one night after flying into Manila. The rooftop pool and bar were a plus after a flight. The hotel is in a great location, an easy walk from Terminal 3. There are lots of food options very close to the hotel and in a nice area. The room had lots of space for a family of four.

Staff are very warm and accommodating. The texture of the sands is quite different from other stations very powdery. Good selection of breakfast buffet not too grand but it is what it is. But the wifi connection is quit slow but its okay. Most important is the beach. Thank you Henann Prime will come back soon. ❤️

From the bustling urban centres to the tranquil island destinations, each region possesses a distinct character, catering to different preferences and travel styles. Food & Dining in the Philippines

A Culinary Journey Through the Archipelago

The Philippines offers a culinary landscape that is both distinctive and deeply satisfying, presenting a unique flavour profile that Malaysian travellers will find both familiar and intriguingly different. Central to its cuisine is the concept of 'ulam', where dishes are savoured with rice, often featuring a balance of salty, sour, and sweet notes. Adobo, a national dish of meat (typically chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a prime example of this flavour philosophy. Its tangy and savoury profile is a delightful introduction to Filipino tastes.

Finding authentic Filipino food is an adventure in itself, with options ranging from bustling local eateries ('carinderias') to sophisticated restaurants. For Malaysian Muslim travellers, navigating halal options requires some diligence. While many dishes are naturally halal, especially those featuring vegetables and seafood, it's advisable to seek out restaurants that explicitly cater to halal dietary needs or those in areas with a significant Muslim population. Some larger hotels and restaurants in major cities like Manila and Cebu are increasingly offering halal-certified meals or are knowledgeable about preparing food according to Islamic dietary laws.

The culinary diversity across the Philippines is remarkable, with each region boasting its own specialties. In Cebu, 'lechon' (spit-roasted pig) is a celebrated delicacy, known for its incredibly crispy skin and flavourful meat. Further north, in Pampanga, considered the culinary capital, expect rich and complex dishes. In the Bicol region, 'laing' (taro leaves cooked in coconut milk with chilies) and 'Bicol Express' (pork in spicy coconut milk) showcase a love for heat and coconut. These regional variations offer compelling reasons to explore different parts of the archipelago.

Dining in the Philippines is often a communal and relaxed affair. Meal times are generally similar to Malaysia, with lunch typically between 12 PM and 2 PM, and dinner from 6 PM to 8 PM. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a 10% tip often added to the bill in tourist-oriented establishments. When ordering, feel free to ask for recommendations, and be prepared for dishes to be served family-style, encouraging sharing. Embracing the local way of eating, often with a spoon and fork, is part of the experience.

Local Etiquette & Safety in the Philippines

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality, but understanding a few key etiquette points can enhance your interactions. The concept of 'pakikisama' (camaraderie or getting along) is important, often leading to a polite and indirect communication style. Malaysians might notice a greater emphasis on personal relationships and a more relaxed approach to timekeeping ('Filipino time'). Showing respect to elders and using polite forms of address, like 'po' and 'opo' (yes), even when speaking English, is a sign of good manners.

When visiting religious sites, such as churches or mosques, modest dress is essential. This typically means covering shoulders and knees. While photography is often permitted, it's always best to observe if others are doing so and to avoid using flash during services. In commercial attractions or public transport, maintaining a polite queue and being mindful of personal space are generally appreciated, though sometimes the sheer volume of people can make this challenging. A friendly demeanour and a smile go a long way in navigating social situations.

For safety, particularly in urban areas like Manila, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure, as pickpocketing can occur in crowded places. Utilising reputable transport options is recommended; ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and transparent way to travel. For inter-city travel, booking tickets in advance, especially for flights or popular bus routes, is advisable. Staying informed about local conditions and exercising common sense will contribute to a secure and enjoyable trip.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. For Malaysian travellers, knowing the contact details for the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila is crucial. The embassy can provide assistance in various situations, including lost passports or emergencies. It's also prudent to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions. Ensuring your passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay is a standard requirement for international travel.

Getting to the Philippines and Getting Around

For Malaysian travellers, reaching the Philippines is straightforward, with numerous direct flights available from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2 to Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB). Airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Cebu Pacific frequently operate these routes, with flight durations typically around 3.5 to 4 hours. Prices can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but it's often possible to find competitive fares, especially if you plan ahead and are flexible with your travel dates. Once you've arrived in the Philippines, navigating between islands and cities is part of the adventure. Domestic flights are the most efficient way to cover long distances, connecting major hubs like Manila, Cebu, and Palawan. For shorter routes or more scenic journeys, ferries and buses are available, though they can be significantly slower. Within cities, taxis and ride-hailing apps are common, while local transport like jeepneys and tricycles offer a more immersive, albeit sometimes chaotic, experience. Planning your inter-city travel in advance is recommended to save time and ensure availability.

The best time to visit the Philippines from Malaysia generally falls within the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower humidity, ideal for beach activities and island hopping. The peak tourist season is typically from December to February, coinciding with cooler temperatures and holiday periods, which can mean higher prices and larger crowds. The wet season, from May to October, brings rain and potential typhoons, though it also offers lower prices and fewer tourists for those willing to risk the weather. cheap hotel
