Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel

The spa was closed for our stay. I would have expected to have been informed of this prior to arrival. Very disappointing as it was a feature we intended to use as part of our itinerary The room was for a disabled person and the en-suite not as expected accordingly. Also disappointingly this was not made clear to us. There were light bulbs out in the en-suite. The tv remote was not operating properly. Lack of attention to detail overall was not of a standard we have come to expect.

Fantastic well laced stylish hotel.

Staff were great, lovely little gym, room a little tired but perfectly serviceable. Good location.

Breakfast was great if paid for the night before- parking charges a little steep- however hotel great, super location and staff very welcoming and professional

Excellent throughout

Disappointing that pool and gym only available at extra charge of £10. This is not explained by hotels.com but in small print on hotel site. Please update info. I also think it is in unreasonable of hotel to charge guests extra. Room modern and comfortable and breakfast and extra cost good

The reviews online are correct. This hotel does not have functioning air conditioning. Luckily the local temperature was in the low 20s. If it had been high summer it woukd have been unbearable. Fof this hotel to say rooms have AC when they don't and obviously haven’t for a the whole year, is unacceptable. Avoid.

The reception area is nice, staff is helpfull.The rooms are clean ,but the overall impression of the rooms is that they need updating.It all looked very tired.

Decent hotel, in a pretty much perfect location. Gymnasium usage was complimentary (but the facility wasn't very good). Use of the pool/jacuzzi carried an additional charge, even if you were a hotel guest. Parking also carried an additional charge. Very clever, seeing as guests would be charged to park anywhere else they found nearby.

The lobby, bar and restaurant have an elegant and timeless feel. I loved relaxing on the terrace with a cup of tea and a book. The room was large but my air conditioner didn’t work and the bed felt worn/old. I mentioned it to the desk and they put a mattress topper on the bed which really fixed the issue. The windows opened and in late August with the fan in the room - I was comfortable. The comfort of the rest of the hotel and the fantastic sauna, pool and hot tub made up for the bed and air con to the point that I will definitely stay here again!

This was my second stay this year with the last approx 5 months ago. On that occasion, the air conditioning was not working in the more expensive privilege rooms and the staff informed me they knew, and this had been the case for months. With the recent warm weather, I checked the website to make sure the privilege rooms are being listed as including having air conditioning as they are more expensive and in fact, they do confirm this as a feature. Low and behold, five months on there is still no air-conditioning, but they are happy to take your extra money and promote it.

Stay here quite often on business and unfortunately there seems to be a gradual decline in maintenance and general condition. The air conditioning in the rooms is still not working and in the room I had this time the TV would not function. It’s not a cheap hotel and the service/ food and pool area usually great however the rooms themselves really need some attention.

Great location for venturing out into Exeter

Lovely friendly and helpful staff, comfortable room and good service, coupled to car parking made this our favourite Exeter accommodation.

Good hotel, great location. Car park too small get there early to get a space. AC never seems to work, think each room needs an ac service

We had a lovely room and free drinks were put into our fridge everyday but didn’t get any milk or teabags, the bed was awful springs protruding everywhere and I came home with a bad back and pillows were not much better. But the worst thing of all was for 4 nights of our 5 the toilet stopped flushing and we had to call maintenance in for those days , we were told they ordered the correct part but it had not arrived before we left but worse than that was the raw sewage smell in the bedroom, however we were greatful for working air con as we heard a lot of people complaining they had none. We were offered a couple of drinks vouchers but when we went to use them we could only have certain drinks to be quite honest I think they should have at least refunded or gave us some meal vouchers . Was such a shame as we had looked forward to our stay and now I feel even more stressed than before I went

The hotel is a bit tired but the enthusiasm of the staff made all the difference. The breakfast buffet was first class and I enjoyed using the swimming pool .

Very good location. All reception and bar staff really helpful. Room changed instantly when I discovered A Con not working. Bar staff went above and beyond to be helpful. Room v good comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. My second visit at this hotel will use it again.
