Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel

Great spot in the city, although there's a £16 cost per day to park. Overall, The hotel is great in some spots and very shabby in others - but for the price, we'd probably look to stay elsewhere for the next visit to Exeter. Good parts were that the majority of the staff were very good, the breakfast was top notch and hotel bathrooms are very nice. The downside is the rooms are really hot and dated (air con very weak, windows don't seem to open and the fans provided don't take the edge off), the pull out sofa bed is harder than the floor and zero bubbles in the Jacuzzi so it's just a warm bath.

I 've been staying there since 2019. Great location, swimming pool, tasty breakfast . Staff are always welcoming and helpful. Just right place to stay.

Positives - location perfect for exploring Exeter and The Quay. Bathroom was nice and more recently refurbished. Carpark was straightforward but you pay. Bar man very helpful, went out of his way to find some peppermint tea, very grateful. Staff were friendly but no one explained about the £10 pp charge to swim… we were simply told we could use the leisure facilities while we stayed. It was cheap but a poor choice - no sleep, bedroom and communal areas tired. Bed had no mattress protector, one thin sheet straight on to an old lumpy mattress. This is surely not good practice, made me feel really icky, couldn’t settle and was meant to be a rare night to ourselves as a couple! Would really suggest investing in new beds, toppers or at the absolute least please use mattress protectors!! We booked on the basis of the proximity to Exeter and the pool, but we didn’t see the small print about £10 pp to use it. We didn’t bother for a £20 swim as the reviews of the pool were not great either! I would have rather paid more for the room to include the swim and mattress protector!! We didn’t have breakfast, everything seems to be an additional charge. Had a beautiful breakfast by the quay, 5 min walk, better value with a view. If you are not fussy where you sleep and want no frills, central location then it may suit, otherwise I would not recommend!

Unfortunately the air con was broken- but they did provide free bottled water and 2 fans.

The hotel is looking a little worse for wear unfortunately and our room was particulary run down. The chair springs had gone and when I sat on it I practically sank through. That being said the room was clean. Only one hand towel for two people. The TV did not work well at all. The decor is very worn and the silicone around the toilet was grim and brown. The staff were always helpful and the hotel incredibly busy and well used. I hope it is going to be renovated at some stage.

Yet again the air conditioning is broken so an uncomfortable warm night was had. I keep hoping this hotel will improve as it’s so convenient for my business and the location is great. It’s let down mainly from a maintenance perspective and unfortunately everytime I visit it continues to disappoint. On this trip there was also issues with the jacuzzi and the bed/ pillows really were not what I would call 4 star. The staff really do try their best but a constant flow of apologies does not make up for just wanting a good nights sleep.

Very nice hotel with friendly, accommodating staff in a great central location and close to some lovely places to eat.

Property in need of refresh, were advertising refit coming. Unfortunately AC broken on hottest week on record then pool closed due to chlorine issue. Staff helpful with water and fans. Food and drink prices bit high but hotel in great location for shopping and attractions.
