Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel

Breakfast was wonderful .. all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly … we will be back next year for our anniversary

Good hotel but aircon wasn’t working and third floor lift out of action so have to walk far to get to third floor room.

Very nice hotel sadly on my stay the air conditioning did not work and I had to change room due to a musty smell , reception staff very helpful and gym swimming pool very good .

Staff very helpful at reception on arrival. Breakfast was plentiful with a good selection including gluten-free alternatives as well. Great location to walk into town but we would recommend doing this in the day. Unfortunately, we arrive too late in the evening and were disappointed when we walked into town to have a meal near the cathedral to find lots of homeless and sleeping bags everywhere along with people that were inebriated. You do tend to find that any labour run towns or cities are very rundown which is a shame because you wouldn’t expect that from a place like Exeter.

In a nicely refurbished on room on the 3rd floor. Lovely decor. Could do with a shelf in the shower and the glass side is not long enough to avoid the floor getting wet. I

A very good team working here who are clearly understaffed. The room was not the best and looked tired. Socket shorted my charger, both the sink and shower plugholes were blocked, and the air-conditioning was broken on arrival (during a heatwave). The latter not their fault, they provided fans which helped. Lovely breakfast, pool and sauna were very nice and the reception administrator was very helpful after I reluctantly came down to complain about the aforementioned issues. Very understanding and I look forward to a better experience next month.

Faulty air con across the hotel made for a poor night’s sleep. Bathroom in need of some TLC and mirror covered in finger prints. Not great overall and so won’t be staying here again with so many other good options in Exeter. Reception staff doing their best but let down by maintenance and cleaning.

The aircon wasn’t working, so it was in really hot. The windows also didn’t open: It was impossible to sleep. The fridge in our room also wasn’t working. We called for it to be fixed. No one came, so we ended up sorting out a faulty electric plug ourselves. Great location, great breakfast. Friendly staff. Pity about the lack of functioning basic amenities. Definitely not worth the price.

Hotel is fine. Breakfast was fine. Room had no working air-conditioning but after making a call we were upgraded to another room where the air-conditioning was working so everything was fine.

This is the second time we stayed at the Mercure Hotel in Exeter. The rooms are lovely, very clean, and everything you need in it. The bed and pillows are both very comfortable. Staff are all polite and helpful. Unfortunately on this occasion, the air conditioning had broken down as had happened to other hotels in the city due to the extreme heat. There was a fan already on in our room and we were told we could open windows and ask for another fan if needed. We were also given free ice cold water and complimentary drinks at the bar. Nothing was too much. I would definitely stay here again.

Lucy at reception was fantastic. We had a minor issue with our room which she resolved immediately. Great location. Nice facilities and breakfast was 10/10 Will be back

When we arrived we were told that the aircon was not working. I was disappointed but polite. We received a free upgrade on our room, drinks, and given free parking. It had been so hot all week so we were looking forward to a cool hotel room. Would rather have had aircon but it’s not receptions fault so we accepted our fate and carried on. We were given a privilege renovated room and it was lovely but HOT. It had the smallest fan and no breeze coming in the windows. We didn’t sleep well. On our second day, I asked if the aircon was being fixed. I was told it is an ongoing problem so they couldn’t say if it would be or not. Not as hot as the night before so that was lucky. I always try to book Mercure hotels as I find that they are cleaner than other chains and I like the breakfast. This is a lovely hotel but without aircon in the summer it is far too hot.

Rooms weren’t ready at check-in time, had to wait in the bar - given complementary drinks vouchers, but all draught was off and there was a very poor selection of bottled drinks. Initial room they gave us was a twin not a double, the air-con wasn’t working and the windows wouldn’t open, so it was stifling. Second room was better, but air-con still didn’t get to temperature. They were clearly understaffed and no management around to support the poor reception staff.
